alarm works but no sound

do any of you clever chaps know what may cause my cerby alarm not to make any sounds it all works fine but like i say i cant get it to make a noise even if i press and hold for 16 seconds the alarm button that is

You tried this:

Sit inside your car, activate the alarm, and then wave your hands at the sonic sensors... (easier way of testing the system than breaking in)

yes all that happens is indicactors flash but still no sounds

the siren unit does die sometimes - mine did except it was going off randomly and developed a chirp on arm / disarm. Its hidden in the dirvers side rear wheel arch so I guess its exposed to the elements.
