On other threads people have mentioned how we need to colonise the other planets in the solar system.

Personally I think I would rather be shot than be made to live on another planet. Nowhere in the solar system is habitable. Perhaps we could somehow exist on another planet but it would be in a hermetically sealed box. You could never see fields or mountains, swim in the sea. Sit under a tree drinking a pint watching cricket, travel, enjoy a breeze and feel the sun on your face. It would like be life in prison with no hope of parole. Except with the constant threat that a technical fault to the systems keeping you alive (or meteorite) would kill you.

Not for me.

I could happily make a list of people I would volunteer for it.

It's OK, it just lacks a little atmosphere.

No, but I suppose it depends how bad life gets on Earth eventually... probably not in our lifetime

Definitely not in our lifetime or your kids or their kids. It will take a long long time until we run out of habitable land on this planet.

Surely then the thread heading should be changed to...

'Would you volunteer to DIE on Mars?'

There you go. Thread ended.

Do you have to go with Elon? That would be a dealbreaker.

I think in a serious answer to the question, 'yes' I would if the project was well financed and technically competent.

Yes, we humans are fragile and you could die in numerous unpleasant ways, but exposure to the near vacuum due to a major habitat failure would be fairly quick.

If one of the first colonists or explorers you would be assured of your immortal place in human history like the Apollo astronauts and other early pioneers.

Another small step for man...

You could do some fairly serious science on the planet and it would just be another step in our long term exploration of the solar system.

Of course lots of stuff can be done cheaper with robotic probes, but versatile humans on hand to fix and supervise stuff is very useful.

You would have to be comfortable in the fact it was possibly a one way ticket, but even that would not put off scores of volunteers including me who would mortgage their souls to be one of the first of the few..

Why would you need to live on another planet?
