Morning All,

I'm attempting to find a car seat that will work for my nearly 3yr old to go in the back of my 996. This is obviously pre isofix and probably also relates to the 997 generation as well.

Following lots of searching i purchased a britax evolva 1-2-3 but this doesn't fit properly in my Carrera.

Please can you share your car seats!!

Me too, I bought the Britax Römer Evola 1-2-3 based on forum threads on here (and 911uk iirc).
And it doesn‘t fit in my 997.1 C2 (no Bose, if it makes a difference) either!

Best seat I could find and in which my 2 y.o. travels is the Recaro Tian Elite. Not perfect, but 99% and I feel comfortable using it.

Longer answer (copy paste) with pictures from my readers car thread and my post on the old baby seat thread to follow…

I tried a few from Halfords for my 991. None of them fitted. The best one was a Joie Bold (which we ended up buying for our family estate), but it was still too big for the 911.

In the end I got my old britax down from the loft.

It's lovely and compact, though probably not as safe as a newer seat I would imagine.

I'm pretty sure it's a britax duo plus from 2012, like this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304994955299

I can double check if needed.

We use it as iso fix, but it does have a non isofix option.

When I had the 996 we used a halfords cheap non isofix and it fitted perfectly. I tried buying one of those for the 991, but it wouldnt fit, so either Halfords have changed the design or the 991 has less space.

Do read up on the car seat manufacturers guidance on how long to use the seat for. As a general rule most will state something like 5-10 years of use or some will advise X number of years use from manufacturing date.

I had a 997.2 and a friend of mine had a 996.1. He recommended a Maxi Cosi Rodifix https://www.maxi-cosi.co.uk/car-seats/rodifix-airp...

He had the one without isofix, but the one with isofix fitted fine in the 997.2 with the isofix bits retracted. Bonus is that they can easily be moved to a car with isofix

I don't have anything to add on car seats that would fit as I don't have a 911 yet, but spent ages looking at options on various sites to understand if there are seats that fit well to a 997 and couldn't find anything conclusive, so now looking at 991's. However, even that doesn't look overly promising.

Why do they fit rear seats that are only suitable for small children, and then not consider that child seats should be able to fit into them?

Well, they do have their own Porsche branded child seats that will fit 991 onwards cars. So they have certainly designed and tested the 991 with child seats in mind!

With the 991, there are so many child seats that fit, that it isn't really a problem at all.
Before, this wasn't really a thing, because you actually didn't need to have a child seat fitted! Well, of course this comes with some caveats.

But there has been a document from the TÜV and the Ministry of Transportation Baden-Württemberg who allowed you to take your children above 125cm without a child seats, as the seats themselves are designed as child seats.

As this was in 1993 and included all 911 up until then, (and I guess in theory for the 993 also). It's only the 996/7 cars who fall between chairs, sort of.
You have to remember that although the last 997 was built in 2012, the 996 was designed in the early 90's. Child safety has come a long way since then!

With the 996/7 not having Isofix (in the rear) you have to

Also, keep in mind that regulations and recommendations constantly change.
The "new" ECE R129 norm replaces the old ECE R44 norm. When the 997 was on sale, there where even older norm ECE R40 was the newest and bestest. And as you can imagine, in 1997 wehen the 996 came out, it probably was an even older one still.

With a little bit of digging, you certainly find a modern child seats for every group (0/1/2/3) that fits the 996/7.
Like I said, in 2023 I can recommend the Recaro Tian Elite in a 997.1 for a 2 y.o. in group 1 mode (put the seat in place with the 3-point belt and use the 5-point belt of the child seat).

Does this mean the 997 is a perfect family car? No, certainly not. But it is usable as a family, if you want it to.

Is that the Recaro Tian Elite, and any idea if it fits a 991?

Thanks!

Yes it is and no I don't know whether it fits a 991.
But afaik, the 991 has a wider seat base than the 997. If this is correct, any seat that fits an 997 should in theory fit a 991.

I'm bumping this thread rather than starting yet another, but considering an old 996 Cab for a bit of fun and have found a child seat that works - but for how long?

The pesky blighters have a habit of growing and just wondered how other's handled this when their little 18 month old needs more leg room a year down the line...

Cheers

Interested as well tbh

I like the thought of a early 996

2 year old and a 4 year old however

So I'd be happy if it's achievable, I'm also 6'3 which might alter things

Cheers

We have a 997 cab and unbolted and removed the rear of the back seats, and removed the squabs to make room for the baby/child seats. Took about 10 mins. And have never put them back in...

I had the same when the kids were younger, a top box / rails also helps swallow the kit needed for touring.

The seat needed can be bulky, lots of advice at 911.uk in the forums for the type of seats available that fit.

Once the kids get a bit older and the seats aren’t needed, they fit well into the rear buckets again provided they aren’t beanstalks!

I updated my setup, now with 2 kids (4 and 1 y.o.)

Now I use a Maxi Cosi Tanza

and a Maxi Cosi Nomad

Both foldable compact seats, intended for travel.
I bought black foam pads to get a good fit, without them it wouldn‘t work…

Main problem being the very long seat belt lock in the 996/7. The foam pads bring the seats forward to get a secure fit.

The 996 Cab has even less room in the back because of the hood mechanism.

I found that by removing all the seat bits i could fit an old Halfords 3-2-1 car seat in there, unfortunately i am not sure they ,ake them any more as that was 6 years ago, may be able to find one on fleabay.

I have a Recaro Mako Elite Group 2/3 in the back of my 996 (non Cab), and it fits really well. Better than the Halfords one we had sitting in the garage, and I haven't had to take out any of the seat bits. I found the seat belt connector blocked the Halfords one, but the Recaro is more curved at the base and fits in.

Have had the Recaro for 4 years or so, so I am not sure if they make them anymore.
