Changing insured car on existing policy

I'm swapping my C3 Aircross for an XC40 T5 Recharge next week. Volvo is worth double, and is group 32. Citroen is group 18.
Yesterday, before going to look at the Volvo, I got some insurance quotes. New policy with my existing insurer came it at £592. Cheapest quote was £450.
I paid £213 to insure the Citroen in February, and "sanity check" quotes are now coming in at around £300. The expected 40 to 50% increase that seems to be affecting pretty much everyone these days.
Seeing these figures, I expected to pay around £100 to swap vehicles for the remaining 4 and a bit months of the policy.
The actual extra premium was..... £0!
Back in March, I traded in an M140i and got a Picanto Turbo. Insurance group 40, down to 12, and worth £6k less.
On that policy (different insurer), they wanted to charge me a few quid more for the 2 months left on the policy. They let me off, because the difference was less than £25.
Struggling to get my head around how it can cost extra to swap for a cheaper car in a much lower group, then 6 months later be free to go up 14 groups and double the value.
