Used DBX - Diff Noise/General Q's
Discussion
Hi Guys,
Seriously considering buying a used DBX, just wondered if anyone on here is running one and how is it fairing?
I have driven a 1/500 car with low mileage but found over around 55 mph when backing off the throttle there was a very noticeable whine which was disappointing and put me off as I intend to use the car for motorway work primarily (possibly diff noise?) Is this a known issue at all?
I have read that the 1/500 cars were a little flaky but not sure how true this is? Is it worth spending a little extra on a more recent car? (707 is beyond my needs and price range)
Any input is much appreciated, thanks.

I have a MY22 DBX and haven’t noticed any whine. I also test drove a few earlier ones and don’t recall any issues with those either. Possibly an issue with the one you test drove. Car has been reliable and no significant issues so far.
The only difference I am aware of with later cars is apparently the interiors have better leather, fewer rattles and more sound insulation. I am not sure exactly when that charge was made, mine is a very early MY22 and has the improvements but they may have been on MY21 as well. The early cars had lots of packs you could specify to tailor them whereas the improved cars just have 3 trim levels. They made the same changes in the other models as well not just DBX. The fewer options meant they could assemble more of the interior in one go to reduce rattles and they upgraded all the leathers as part of the whole “ultra luxury” thing. Anyway that’s what the salesman said when I bought mine!
I can say that mine feels more luxurious than the earlier DBXs I drove but that could be down to spec. It is certainly a quieter and better built interior than my DB11. I am not aware of any mechanical differences but someone more knowledgeable might chip in there.

Had the DBX from new (it was replaced early on - long story but not diff related) and it’s now covered around 22k miles in 2.5 years. (I also had a 1/500 car initially but that got taken back as it didn’t like to start and was replaced by a standard DBX which is the one that has the occasional diff whine). My car is a 21 plate
I have heard the very same noise you mention. Thought it was the gearbox so off it went to AM - after several trips to the dealership and what was far too long a process and poor service from both the dealer and AML, it got assessed.
AM says it is coming from the diff but that it’s just how some of them sound. No warning lights, everything is working as it should and the noises (they took sound recordings) are within tolerance.
So seems that perhaps it’s a ‘feature’ of the diff. To be fair, the car doesn’t feel like it has an issue - it was just the sound. AML said they sometimes add in additional noise deadening if the whine is above a certain level (no idea if that’s true).
Mine wasn’t the only car up for review so I was led to believe but it wasn’t necessarily another DBX.
I did have a number of quality issues early on but they were sorted by the suppling dealer (not the dealer i mention above) and were brilliant - they are just further away so tried my local dealer, which was a mistake - have gone back to the original supplying dealer.

Thanks for the very useful contributions all. At least I now know I am not going mad as the dealer seemed to be dismissive of the noise.
DBXExige - has your car always had the whine or has it developed over time? Sounds a frustrating experience and hope you can get some kind of resolution from AM.
Must say this is making my search for a used DBX a little more difficult, coupled with the sheer distance that AM dealers with reasonably priced used examples are from me in the SW.
I hope to drive an early 2022 my in the near future with similar miles to yours so will report back if similarly afflicted.

Makes sense. The salesman said the new MY22 car I bought had increased sound insulation to reduce NVH noise particularly at the rear. Could explain why I don’t hear the whine and why they changed the spec if that was the fix. Gassing Station | Aston Martin | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
