An obvious point to start: everything that follows is purely and wholly subjective.

We have mainly lived outside the U.K. for the past twenty five years. There are lots of things the other countries do better or things that annoy me about the UK. However there are also lots of things I miss and think Britain does best.

This will be controversial given the reputation outside the UK, but food. I love lots of foreign food and British food can be very much hit or miss but the best full English breakfasts, pies, roasts, cheeses or cakes and desserts are up there with any other cuisine.

Motorsport, car enthusiasts and trackdays. Having lived in Switzerland where there are no circuits I don’t think we realise how spoilt we are in the UK.

Pubs. Particularly country pubs. It is a beautiful autumn day here and I miss being able to take the dog for a walk and stop off at a proper pub, with a fire, and sit with the dog having a (proper) pint of ale.

Talking of walking: the right to roam. Britain doesn’t just have great countryside, you can also easily explore it on foot.

Humour. Perhaps a cliche but there is something unique about British humour. Perhaps it is our social awkwardness that requires it.

I am sure there are other things.

Persuading ourselves that we are, as a country, still relevant and potent, whilst in reality in terminal decline.

Whinge (but not actually do anything about it)

I'd agree with pubs though, best in the world

I was trying to start a positive thread but I suppose this is PH. Why not start start a separate thread about what we do worst if you want to be negative?

If you wanted only happy clappy responses, which some might argue align with the delusion I describe, perhaps you should have said so at the start. wink

Well given the thread title it’s pretty obvious isn’t it?

It's patchily applied, but I think a sense of fair play is a British characteristic, along with a love of the underdog.

2nd'd - I was supposed to have the flu jab 2 weeks ago at 2.12pm precisiely and got there about 2pm only to see there there were at least 250 people queueing out of the surgery, across the car park and into the school field next door needless to say I didn't bother - I have another appt at 12.07 today and I have no doubt it will be the same again. biggrin

We used to take the dog on holiday. Rent a cottage somewhere then walk every day. We’ve been to Dorset, Cotswolds, New Forest, Lake District, Norfolk. Always found lovely countryside with great walks.

Surely that's an example of excellence at queue jumping?

When I volunteered at a flu clinic a few years back I overheard one woman say to another, "I've arrived 20 minutes early to avoid the wait." Unfortunately for her, it seemed everyone else had too.

Provide a safe environment to live for it's citizens

Accept people from other countries/faiths to live here

Breakfast

Pubs

Free healthcare, although not at it's best at the moment.

Car insurance is cheap compared to the USA, even with the recent price hikes.

Many of my friends live in the USA, they envy many things about me living in the UK.
