Fantastic - thanks for the heads-up smile

I remember the story well and I have to say I'm surprised they managed to get a full-length movie out of it

Frederick Forsyth at his best.

Read to book some years ago, now looking forward to the film.

I've read this a number of times, and had heard there was to be a movie, but had expected a TV special type affair. Didn't know it would be Disney and Travolta.

Given Travolta’s involvement it’s refreshing that it’s not been Americanificated, with a chap in a P-80 being shepherded by a chap in a P-38, with credit to Lockheed Martin.

It’s only a short story.

To be fair to him, he's an aeroplane guy, and like most aeroplane guys, that comes above all else. I also just found out he had his own total electrical failure in IMC in the 90s, so I guess in a sense, he's lived the story.

Travolta’s a proper plane nerd, and used to own and fly a Vampire, so I’d hope the odds are in favour of it not being another U571!

Some of the filming was done at a disused airbase just up the road from me (former RAF West Raynham). Travolta was caught doing a spot of shopping in the Morrisons in nearby Fakenham, and made the local press: not much happens in this bit of Norfolk! biggrin

I remember watching a cartoon/animated version of The Shepherd on YouTube about a year ago - was quite good so looking forward to a live action version.

There's a nice audio version of The Shepherd on BBC Sounds. It was on Radio 3 a few years ago, and is always an atmospheric listen when I'm slogging up the M6 to visit family at Christmas:

In fairness, if it is accurate to the book, it wouldn't have been overloaded with a need for extras!

Well if I'd been in it he wouldn't have got lost in the first place!

Working that through, if they'd hired me they'd have no film...

Yes, that must be it...

It would seem that they've tinkered with the plot a bit, mind you... not only does the Vampire suffer total electrical failure, one of its tail booms appears to have dropped off:

Probably didn't realise it was a twin-boomer.

The thing that gets me is that they were presumably working on a photograph or a still from the film: somebody took a conscious decision to photoshop the other boom, fin and tailplane out.

Why would anyone have thought that was a good idea? What did they think they were removing - a weird shadow? nuts

And if they don't remove the 'spare' boom and fin from every frame where it appears in the film, people will say 'Where is the aeroplane on the poster?'

It's odd and it's plain wrong. But I do remember people in art studios changing what I'd given them until it was wrong, saying 'I thought it looked better like that'...
