It's not an Antikythera mechanism, Enigma machine or Babbage Difference Engine...

I don't know what it is, but it's the next project for a bloke who's already built an Antikythera mechanism and wants a new challenge... spin

It was unveiled today:

'The Writer', an automaton built by Jaquet Droz, a Swiss watch maker, in around 1780. It's a machine in the shape of a small boy sitting at a table and holding a pen, and the mechanism concealed in his body allows the boy to write any preprogrammed sentence up to 40 characters long, and written over 2 or 3 lines.

Only if a daisy wheel printer consists of a mechanical small boy with a concealed mechanism writing on a piece of paper with a pen and ink!

Fantastic!

That must have caused a few heads to have exploded at the unveiling.

Not to mention the odd churchman making a scene about the Devil walking amongst them.
