Just a thought, probably controversial but we keep seeing major crashes on motorways that block the road for hours and inconvenience lots of people.

So should there be a default fine (says £1000) for just being involved in a motorway crash that blocks the road?

Thoughts?

So we fine the innocent party while the potential cause is 5 miles away ?

No. There are so many variables that saying every one stems from a mistake is wrong.

Particularly in terms of motorway crashes sometimes the vehicle which has actually started things is miles up the road.

You want the road to be closed for longer to establish guilt even if there are no injuries???

A fine is a device to dissuade someone from doing something intentionally. How many motorway accidents are intentional?

The fact someone gets caught up in the actual crash says they were doing something wrong e.g. driving too close, not paying attention, etc, etc.

These crashes cause monumental problems for everyone else and it ends up as an insurance claim with similar effect to blocking a minor country road that inconvenices 2 sheep and a cow. There needs to be a way of recognising the effect it has on everyone else.

No. It takes only one idiot to cause a crash and he can already be miles away, car unscathed.

All those left behind can be innocent.

Don't forget that crashes can be caused by illness or stray animals etc

Anyone whose vehicle has been bent, is upside down or ended up off the motorway, fine the lot of them, consider it collective punishment for the effect on everyone else.

So your travelling in the 3rd lane doing 70mph, passing a vehicle in the middle lane, when all of a sudden, the vehicle in the middle lane, pulls out and clips your front N/S sending you into a spin, taking out 6 or 7 other cars, while the car that caused the accident, decided to drive off.

Your happy taking a fine for something you had no control over.

I think you could have done with critically evaluating this part of your idea before you posted it. Let's say you slow down and I drive into the back of you. What were you doing wrong?

So I'm driving along minding my own business on the motorway and someone undercuts me and drives into me.

And I get fined.

What a genius idea laugh

I wonder if the op has managed to move ‘his car’ away from the nasty puddle yet.

Not doing anything wrong, you caused the accident by not being observant and leaving a big enough gap unless it is a crash for cash scam. Just to add if it does not block the motorway then there is no reason for a fine. The intent is to discourage the behaviour that causes big crashes where the motorway is blocked, I can only assume you like being stuck in traffic for hours on end because of a big motorway crash?

Good critical thinking on your part.
