Please educate me about Ford Fiesta STs

With the extended ULEZ zone, our Diesel Mini is fairly useless to us, so I'm pondering something else.
I know nothing about Fiestas so hopefully someone can educate me.
Doing a search on Autotrader for Fiestas with ST in the keywords is giving me what I'd say is quite a varied list, although most seem to either be 1.6T EcoBoost ST-3 or 1.0T EcoBoost ST-Line

The Mk7 Fiesta ST is a cracking car (I'm an owner one as a daily driver for the last 2 years which I have modified to Stage 2 with lowering springs and braided brake lines). I would suggest a post 2016 car as it will have the slightly softer rear suspension which came in on the ST200. For the one you shared, given it is a 9 year old car now I'd want to see evidence it has had its cambelt done as they are due at 10 years max. They do take power well but would also see if it is a coolant tank recall tank and whether it had the work done. The coolant systems on them are a bit s
t and the tanks can crack anyway but otherwise if you fancy it, give it a go! I'd always look for an unmodified one or one you know has had exactly what you want doing but I know Peron is highly rated in the FB group!danmarr14 said:

I thought maybe there was a certain model of the ST that looked a bit racier like that one as standard, but that's obviously not the case?

Otherwise there's not much choice to make. Plenty of ST3 models about which have good spec as standard so you just need to pick your preferred colour.
The 2019 car in the link is a mk8. It's a 1.5 triple instead of the 1.6 for pot in the mk7. The mk8 is a bit more refined and has a more modern interior. Obviously it's a newer car so will cost more. Just depends on your budget really.

Good strong cars the MK7 Fiesta ST. They do tend to get stolen a fair bit though so that may be your main worry. The ST-Line is just a trim level; the ST is the full fat performance version, so that will be the one you want. I test drove one years ago and genuinely loved it.
ST-1 is base spec. Quite rare actually. Cloth Recaro's and have a normal key (not keyless). Don't think they have LED lights up front either and have the really horrible looking bog-standard media unit. However, ref my first point above about being stolen, that could potentially be a good thing.

If I did go ahead it'll be living in a garage, luckily the days of parking on the street in Fulham are behind me.

Needing 5dr narrows it down a lot.
The mk7 was available as a 5dr at the very end of its run but they are rare. I don't think I've ever seen one on the road.

Personally I think the mk7 looks a lot better as a 3dr. It suits the shape. But I've always thought a 5dr mk7 would be an interesting car to have.
How old is your child and how often will they be in the back? I only had a 5dr until my boy was about 18 months old. It was useful with the rear facing infant carriers that you take off the isofix base. Once they can sit facing forwards having a 3dr is less of an issue. In fact in some ways it's better as you can strap them in square on rather than from the side. Now he's nearly 8 he just gets in and out of the car himself so it's fine.
If it has to be 5dr and you have the budget I'd go for a mk8 ST3 with performance pack. Some had the mountune upgrade from factory but if not plenty of people do remap them for more power.
I've driven a mk8.5 recently which is not much different to the mk8. In comparison to my mk7 it is generally a better car. Its faster and the engine feels more turbo charged with more low end torque. Put it in sport mode and you'll get pops and bangs if that's your thing. The ride is more settled and its a nicer place to sit. That said it's a big premium over the mk7 and I felt it wasn't really worth the substantial cost to change. The mk7 is still a great car.

coming from my perspective - owned and modified a mk7 st3 for 2 years, then worked at ford. we hardly ever saw the mk7 in for repairs. pretty darn bulletproof imo and take power well. very old school hot hatch feel i found. i ended up going with pumaspeed for my tuning needs. quick on stage 2 at around 245. rapid at stage 3 running around 330hp. im pretty sure laird performance had a couple videos of their stage 3 actually beating an audi r8 on the drag strip if thats your thing. in short, good engine, handles very well and would be my pick of the few especially if you can get a nicely kept unmodified example.

I had a good drive in the mk7 140 red edition when it first came out. Great little car and the 1.0 ecoboost has plenty of character and pulls surprisingly well. Just saying that if there is no issue regarding budget or insurance you may as well go for the ST if you can.

Hmmmmm, good point. She's just over 13 months so I guess not too much longer with the isofix in the back seat situation then? From 18 months are you saying I can have her in the front seat, or just easier in the back seats as she'll be sitting forward? Still in a baby seat though? I must say I do like the sound of 330bhp - being mostly used to a 4500bhp Evo 6 and a 650bhp Corvette in the summer, I'm not afraid of power haha. I guess I'd need to check what modification does to the insurance though of course.....
