Depreciation proof motoring
Discussion
Looking for something big and comfy, needs to take 4 adults and 3 dogs.
Not worried about mpg, won’t do a lot of miles and not too worried about the odd big bill. I’d really like to buy a car and keep it 10+ years and hopefully not lose much or maybe even see it appreciate.
E61 M5
B7 RS4 (maybe too small)
C6 RS6 (had one already - potential massive bills)
C7 RS6 (don’t know much about these)
S212 AMG
What am I missing?
Budget reasonably flexible, say 20-35k-ish.
M5 in the lead so far. These got dear though. When I bought my RS6 they were the same price - low 20’s. The RS6 is still low 20’s and the M5 is low 30’s.

So PH….fuel and maintenance no issue but wanting a car for free
I won’t do many miles in this car and have a workshop, ramp, tools and mates who know what they’re doing.Like I say, the odd big bill over a ten year period is fine, I don’t want £10k per year in maintenance.
Cayenne Turbo?

I would say the Macan GTS as well, but not sure it would be big enough.

Cayenne is an interesting shout, cheers.
I wonder about supercharged L322 range tigers, are they at the bottom of the curve?
I've always liked the look of that Cayenne generation as well, I wonder about supercharged L322 range tigers, are they at the bottom of the curve?
There's also the Maserati Levante with the 3.0V6 petrol, there still may be some depreciation though..

The E61 is the best shout, the V10 in the M5 is an insane engine, it was a full on ‘supercar’ lump that was placed into an everyday family saloon/estate, something that realistically wasn’t the best choice, but the world is a better place for it.
They aren’t the cheapest of things to run, but can be ok providing you choose wisely, the biggest issues they face is rod bearing failure but it’s not the end of the world if they fail(about £1.5-2k to replace), failures are mainly related to either incorrect/low oil or a driver that gives it beans before the oil is up to temp. Just make sure you find an example that has a good maintenance history(and ideally a low owner count) and treat it well. Alternatively, find one that has recently had the bearings done.

The E63 is the pick.
Yup, that. Only slightly biased, but mine (S212 5.5) is still worth the same as I paid for it 3.5 years ago, and the S211 and the 6.2 cars seem to have already bottomed out and started rising. Servicing is fairly sensible, mpg not actually terrible considering, apart from a slight tendency to eat front tyres it's been pretty reasonable for running costs for a 550bhp car.
