Civic Type R (FL 5)
Discussion
Hello All
I am seriously researching getting a recent (March 23 on) Approved Used FL 5 Type R. There are quite a few now on the Honda network with less than 5k on them, and the premium to list has now gone.
Does anyone have any experience of these, or a well-considered opinion?
I don't normally care about such things, but I'd be interested in views on the relative depreciation of a nearly-new Type R over 3 years / 36k vs my current car - a 4 year old F90 M5 with 33k miles. So in three years mine will be a 7 yr old M5 with 70k on it!
Any feedback greatly appreciated. Thank you.
John

Could you share your serious research with others here?
What I mean is I am reading all the online reviews, researching values / availability and checking out YouTube reviews. Just trying to gain as much knowledge as I can about the car before driving one or lining up a deal over the phone. No specific content to share - just lots of Google work!I mean, they've literally only just come out. No one has a crystal ball on how much they're gonna be worth in x amount of years time or how much they'll depreciate. They're expensive, for what it's worth, but they've received nothing but good reviews overall. The FK9's are holding their value pretty well. Even FK2's are from what I've seen.
Life's too short. If you want one, get one. Cars cost money and most depreciate somewhere down the line. Respectfully, I never understood this train of thought. If you can afford it, go for it. Pretty sure you won't regret it.

I'd guess that your M5 is probably worth around £45k currently and the nearly new Type R's are just over that?
In theory, if the heaviest depreciation occurs in the first 3 years then the new Honda stands to lose more. But recent times have really skewed this with short supply increasing demand for cars under 3 years old. That may be about to change but on balance I think the Type r will lose a bit less over the next 3 years than your BMW. Just guesswork of course.
A 7 year old M5 with 60k miles looks like £25k. A 3 year old Type r with 30k miles still around £30k.
As said though, I don't think it'd bother me all that much. You should go with the one you want. Although worth considering that the running costs of a brand new Honda should certainly be less than the M5.

Thanks Chris, that was pretty much my thinking although the M5 is worth a couple of grand less than you say - I am well aware that values are generally lower at the moment.
As you and culpz say, depreciation isn't a big issue, I have my own thoughts and just wanted to gather opinions, and yes I'm with you that running costs will definitely be lower.
