Hi,

I have a Canon 24-70 f2.8L that has started throwing error Err01 on my 5D MkII with the message "Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts."

Cleaning the contacts does not help and trying another lens gives no errors, so I am assuming the issue lies with the lens.

Searching here gives 3 recommendations for where to send it for repair, but some of the threads are quite old.
Fixation - but their website says no service for this lens.
H. Lehmann in Stoke.
1st Aid Repairs in Tunbridge Wells.

Anyone have recent experience of repairs that they would care to recommend (or suggest I avoid)?

TIA

I had that. Canon and Fixation no longer booking the original 24-70 in for repair, presumably no spare parts. I gave up looking and bought a Mk II lens

Drat, that's annoying. Thanks for the heads up.

Have you tried other lenses to make sure the problem doesn't lie in the body?

Have you tried the lens with another body?

Surely this is the perfect opportunity for some creative man maths?

Like the thinking - looking for the excuse to go mirrorless. smile

A little research suggests it is the aperture control module in the lens that is faulty.

When I asked Canon, they no longer support/service the Mk 1 24-70 2.8L; neither do Fixation as they can’t get parts from Canon. Any luck with Sendean ?

Sorry. I missed that in the post above. That's not great of canon. :-(

Unfortunately they say it has reached the end of its service life and no longer offer service or repair.

It is a shame, but when a working, used lens can be bought for less than the cost of a repair, it’s difficult to justify. And, the mark two lens is much better anyway.

I think the shipping and insurance costs on top of the repair cost would make your kind offer financially unviable.

And sadly import duty and VAT on the repair and shipping

HMRC said:
Duty on goods you export for repair

You’ll pay duty at re-import on charges made for repair or replacement, plus any inward shipping and insurance costs you pay for the return of the goods.

VAT is charged on the repair costs, plus outward and inward freight charges and duty, but excluding insurance charges.
