Good Evening

I seem to be getting a hankering to sell my Rolex and get a lower value watch, and I keep reverting back to wanting a Tudor Ranger.

The watch I own is a 2018 Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36mm with a white grape dial. Advertised retail prices seem to be all over the place I had it valued a few months ago for insurance purposes at £5,800. I understand this probably isn't an achievable value due to potential sale fees selling on watch collecting/being a private sale/also sounds like the market might be on the decline.

I got thinking that Goldsmiths are an authorised Rolex dealer and have a pre owned programme and also stock the Ranger.

I'm a bad at negotiating from a buying point of view, and also have no experience in selling a watch, although just seeing if anyone roughly knows a realistic part exchange value on the watch or value of the overall deal (i.e if they discount Rangers etc.)

I don't need to sell the Rolex so I don't want to waste the shops time if expectations would be miles away. Although I've got no idea on the margins on used watches and also I appreciate that they will probably need to service the watch to go onto their approved used programme.

Any views and opinions appreciated

Thanks in advance

Ed

I would start with a chat with Dom Hackett:

https://www.hackettwatches.com/

I have dealt with him before and found him to be very good. He may be able to source a Tudor and do a PX.

Definitely worth a call.

I was going to suggest the same. I did a deal with Dom on my Submariner for a lovely Tudor BB58

What are you expecting to receive and what is a white grape dial? Post a pic.

Goldsmiths and Mallards both offered £1000 more than Hackett for my 39mm OP

Thanks everyone ,I've seen Hackett mentioned a fair few times on here , but I'm ideally after a new Ranger as the price difference between new and used seems very minor so wasn't sure if he could source new watches, ideally I would be looking at £2500 cash back on the deal. So £5200 for the rolex is no discount is added to the Ranger. Although I don't know if this is miles off or achievable.

Picture of the watch below , the dial is nothing special just wasn't sure if it was disirable or not. It's not an available colour in anything over 36mm - at the time I was set on this colour otherwise I would of opted for a larger size.

I can't see a trader buying in your watch for £5200....

Just offer to watchfinder, Dom etc and let us know what you get offered.

I'd put it on eBay at £5995 with a best offer option and see what you get offered.
I've sold 2 watches on eBay recently, and with their free authentication service, there's very little risk to sellers.
The buyer can't receive it and say there's any issues once it's been seen by the authenticator.

I know £5,200 is probably unachievable as a trade in was more if they would inflate a part ex price rather than discount a watch. Watchfinder are at £4,400 and watch collecting think £4,750 as a reserve to hopefully make £5,000.

I had never thought about eBay to be fair, if you don't mind me asking what were the values of the watches sold?

I'm waiting for Goldsmith's to come back tomorrow with a price, against a Ranger. Then will decide how to proceed

I sold my 16600 sea-dweller to Dom earlier in the year. He gave me a very fair price, and as always, great to deal with.

You would need to pay ebay fees of £767 though unless there is an offer available.

That's true, I get an 80% off final value fees offer sent to me at least once a month.

Thats what I've used when sold on ebay which makes a big difference to net figure. Sold a Speedmaster and an Explorer 2 on there this year. The 80% offers come up every two weeks, you just need to make sure that you renew the listing (based on a 'buy it now sale' or 'offers sale' as opposed to 'auction sale') when the offer period comes up again, otherwise if it renews automatically outside the offer period and the watch sells, you will get hit with the full 105+ listing fee!

Is there not a fear that the buyer will moan that it's not in exactly the condition described ie more scratches etc and ask for a refund? And then return you a watch which is a fake or damaged?

Thanks

I think their return also has to go through the authenticator to stop this from happening.

This is the beauty of the authentication process, it will protect both parties. Makes the ebay fee's worth it in my book ... even more so with an 80% reduction.

I advertised a watch on FB marketplace ... wow, what an experience. 99% scammers ... one look at their FB profile (usually pictured with a staffy or an off road motorbike, head to toe in Addidas, 6 stone dripping wet) and you know their a wrong un. After a while, I got used to their approach ... they asked zero questions about the watch so had no interest in buying ... they just wanted to 'acquire' it. Anyway, I'm sure some people have had better experiences with FB marketplace but based on what I experienced, its full of crooks.

Thanks.
I might be selling my omega seamaster soon. It's well worn with plenty of dings and scratches.
Would ebay still be a good place to sell? I have never sold through ebay and so have zero feedback.
