I'm looking at a couple of options for a new car, and wondered if anyone had real experience of fuel consumption? I drive a bit for work, so need something that wouldn't be too bad on a motorway/dual carriageway cruise. I appreciate that's not the main reason for one of these cars, but it would be used that way.

So am looking at 308 GTi, Cupra Leon, Octavia VRS type things... Maybe a Focus ST?

So - any real experience of sitting at the speed limit on a motorway/dual carriageway?

Thanks in advance 👍

In my experience of these sorts of cars, you can get 40mpg on long runs and driving sensibly. Realistically over a longer term, it's more likely to be low 30s. Either way, certainly not wallet busting.

Leon Cupra 290/300 returns low-mid 40’s mpg on a mway run at sensible keeping up with traffic plus a little more speeds.

As others have said, at a steady cruise at the motorway limit (or even slightly more wink ) they can be very reasonable on fuel.
The problem comes when the temptation to boot it and the 'turbo kicks in', then average drops accordingly.

Thankyou 👍 exactly the sort of input I was looking for! I know one of these won't be as good on fuel as what I had before, but, just wanted a bit of reassurance that driven sensibly on 'boring' driving, it wouldn't be too silly!

Agree with all the comments on the Cupra. My 290 would do 40's on a run. Even with my, at the time, short town trips mainly and commute, I'm pretty sure the overall MPG was 30-something. Freakishly good on fuel for a 300 BHP, automatic hot-hatch.

Now just need to find something on my shortlist that doesn't have silly mods or a pops and bangs map!

Sounds like you're mind's made up, but just to add you'd have to really tickle the accelerator to achieve 40mpg in a Focus ST. Best I've got is 37-38 on a long motorway run. I'm not particularly heavy footed either and tend to get around 33 on mixed driving.

That's great input - thankyou - sounds like the ST is off the shortlist...

Good luck, it's not an easy task with these cars!

Another (former) Cupra owner. My Leon Cupra ST long term average always sat around 30-32 which I was really pleased with as I never drove it with economy in mind, and hitting 40+ on longer dual carriageway runs wasn’t too difficult either with cruise on low to mid 70’s.

I once managed to get 52mpg from my old Cupra 290.
Picture to prove it!
It was a warm day and I was cruising round the M25 while the cameras were on at a solid 50mph ish so incredibly boring and not representative of what I usually see, but it’s possible and I’d agree that for the power they can be surprisingly good on fuel.

Excellent!

I'm guessing it's the same engine as a similar age Octavia vrs so that should be capable of similar?

This imho via having a Kia Proceed GT Tech at present is fairly accurate.

Im averaging around Mid 30's on a 10mile commute each day a few times a week and 1 20 mile each way trip back home.

Its only uneconomical when you drive it like you stole it. Thats not to say i dont have a bit of fun.

If you're looking at the 260-270bhp version of the 308 GTi with the Alcon brakes make sure they are in good condition.

The cheapest discs are £700 from Godspeed.

The bigger issue is the pistons in the brake caliper. The calipers need rebuilt with stainless steel pistons. The parts cost £290 from Godspeed.

If the previous owner has allowed the pistons to deteriorate too badly and forced them back into the caliper you might need new calipers.

If you're looking at the 308GTi I would look for one the previous owner has already carried out the piston refurbishment. Pick the wrong car that needs discs, pads, new calipers and a stainless piston upgrade and the bill will be huge. You probably would struggle to see change from £3k.

They are very underrated cars, but the front brakes put a lot of people off. You will find a lot of the cars up for sale have been moved on as the brakes are needing repaired.

Wookie on here must be involved with Peugeot or Alcon. On a previous thread he said he would look into this issue. He didn't come back.

If you look on Pug1 Off parts you can get the Godspeed discs and caliper rebuild kits for less than on the Godspeed website

Moved my 308gti on about six months ago.

You’ll get low to mid 40s if you keep it at sensible speeds on motorways. It is quite economical being quite light and only a 1.6 turbo. It will run fine on 95ron but it does prefer super unleaded which will push your costs up a wee bit.

Rides really nicely as well. Not too hard at all yet is a blast on decent backroads. Seats are lovely and comfy yet very supportive.

Brakes have been discussed but they are phenomenally good. They are overkill on a car like this but they really inspire confidence when used in anger. Get the pistons changed for Godspeed ones and you’re sorted. Unfortunately it’s a case of when not if they rust up. Catch it early and it’s a few hundred quid. Leave it and you’ll have to replace callipers AND discs and that can be around £3k to sort with original parts and they are main dealer fit only.

Servicing can a bit pricey as plugs have to be changed every service but mine was utterly reliable but do make sure you take it for an extended test drive as not everyone gets on with the raised binnacle but it sort of makes sense that it’s more in your eye line than a traditional setup but typical Peugeot is to do things a bit differently rather than simply stick a heads up display in like other manufacturers.

Good car that’s pretty rare. You won’t pass another that often!

3k for the 308 brakes are the absolute worst case scenario the caliper upgrade is a must imo but it can be done for under £500, you'll see low to mid 40's on a run.

I averaged 32mpg in my 308gti.

But you don't buy these cars to worry about the fuel economy.

It was a brilliant car. I may be biased but it's probably the most fun of the ones you mentioned to drive.

I only sold it as it got me back into driving again. So I swapped it for a Westfield and a shed for a daily.
