Just to clarify, I have held a full UK driving licence since 1992 which is, and always has been, clean.

On Friday I have my ADI part 2 driving test. Basically an extended test with a much higher threshold for the pass

For those who aren't up to speed with the current guidelines - a learner will take a test of approximately 40 minutes and can have up to 15 minors and still pass

For an ADI, this is an hour test with a threshold of up to 6!

I've had some lessons through the training and although he said my driving was of a decent standard, there are some elements that need a touch of improvement to reach test standard. Totally accepting that I have some habits that need to be addressed and am practising accordingly.

Anybody done this, or similar additional driver training? Any advise or anything specific to be aware of?

No, but I did IAM a while back, and also police skid pan training when this was available to,the public. Best advice is to try to remain relaxed, and not be put off by minor faults. Examiner above all wishes to feel safe.

Have you done a running commentary? Describing what you observe in the way of signs and hazards, and what you may possibly anticipate from that information? I don’t know if that is done now, but I often do that when on my own.

ADI part two, when I did my training, seemed to be presented as a stand alone tickbox item before taking part three. In essence you are demonstrating the high standard that you will expect from your students. Commentary was never introduced during this phase, which is bonkers looking back, as quelle surprise if you can't articulate what's happening while you're on the move, how on earth do you expect to teach it to a novice?!

Best advice is practice commentary on every drive. You might wish to switch it off for the test. On the test itself keep hydrated and stay calm. Nerves are the killer. If you make a mistake, forgive yourself and move on, or you'll make more.

Good luck for Friday.

Thanks all, much appreciated.

With regards to commentary - this is something that I am using during my practice drives and finding very useful. I've messaged my trainer to find out if there is an opinion on providing commentary during the test itself - as an example I think showing awareness in a 30 zone but staying under due to a wet and greasy road surface and parked vehicles would show good road sense and a sensible thought process, as would staying below the limit to keep an extended gap to the vehicle in front due to road conditions on an NSL etc.

As with any test, stay cool, calm and collected. If you make a mistake, don't fret about it. It's happened, you can't change it, move on. They may not have noticed, or it may not be as bad as you think. I thought recently I'd failed both my motorbike riding tests. I actually ended up with 1 minor total between both tests, and that was for going too slow!

Commentary would compliment your driving in both examples you've identified. It's more a case of "failing to mention something which you may later rely on in court" lol

Just an update to give closure (if any of you care lol)

Passed with 2 minor faults. A small overshoot on an angled junction that meant the passenger corner was just over the line, and clipped a forming cycle lane as I moved out into the carriageway

I'm currently.bouncing bouncebounce

clap well played, that man! That's a great result to just have 2 minors.

For those that wished me well, many thanks. Things have accelerated pretty quickly and my part 3 training is now done and dusted. I'm working my notice and due to collect my car on the 11th of January and start teaching under my PDI license on the 15th

Demand is mental. I've made one facebook post, which a few friends shared, and have 8 lessons booked in for my first week in January already with several others in contact. Hopefully will be starting my first week with a full diary. I've also got a mix of new, part trained and test level (both with a single fail) so plenty to get my teeth into.

I can't wait. 28 years in the IT business nearly done and dusted!

Well done and good luck! When do you think you might go for your Pt3 test?

We get another 20 hours of in car tuition within the first 3 months and have to book a test by the end of that period so would presume April/May as a timescale for my part 3 test - PDI license will run until July so that gives a bit of leeway for a retest should it be needed

My advice would be to get that 20hrs in asap and go for your first test in good time so that you can get any retests in within the PDI window. The Pt3 test is the worst part of the ADI qualification process in my view; it's so subjective. I passed 3rd time. My first two were with the same test centre/examiner and I scored 1 or 2 points below a pass. On the 3rd and final attempt I passed 4 points short of a full house ( different test centre and examiner), Just my experience smile
