Where do you guys that change the watch batteries yourselves buy the batteries from? Also is there a decent and not too expensive tool for removing the case back?

I always buy Renata batteries on ‘a popular internet auction site’. Haven’t ever found them cheaper anywhere else. I just put in ‘Renata’ and then the 3 digit battery number and filter the search as ‘cheapest with p&p’.

Actually did it this week to replace a battery in my Seamaster, £1.84 for a Renata 395
Regarding the case back tool, it's going to depend what watch it is but something like this has seen me fine for the few I do.

Used some of the tools to change a strap this week as well, it's not 'high end' but perfectly good enough for the odd battery change or strap swap.

I was in York a few years ago and needed a new battery in a cheap watch. Popped into here to see if they could sort it. I couldn't help but laugh when he gave me the price:

Walked out and went to the local market stall and got a new battery fitted for £3. I am sure those prices are fine for an expensive watch that may need testing after a new battery is fitted but way OTT for most others.

I had a few leaky Ranata batteries a few years ago so have always bought Seiko / Seizaiken batteries, never had any problems with them.

On a side note, my top tip for opening a screw type case back is to put electrical tape where the recesses are and when the prongs on the tool bite into the tape it conforms to the case back. I find it adds grip and if you slip you do not scratch the case back.
