Anyone done it?

I’ve always seen it as something old people do, but lately I’ve done it a couple of times and I’m only 51!

Last time I walked away from my £80 but thankfully the cash machine retracted the cash back into my account.

Today I got chased down the street in the rain by a nice lady at the Asda till. I’d withdrawn £10 cash back at the self serve till and forgotten to pick it up. She handed it to me in the street. I thanked her and went on my way. On my way back to my car I nipped back into Asda and bought her a box of chocolates as a thank you, including the receipt in case she thought I’d just took them straight off the shelf smile

Once a guy ahead of me withdrew a wodge of cash and walked away after his card came out. I had to tell him he forgot his cash. It looked like several hundred pounds.

I’ve walked out of a restaurant without paying once. Completely forgot. Usual procedure is to go to a pub and pay at the bar for a Full English on a Sun morning. The pub was closed that day, so went to a nearby restaurant, forgot you pay at the end of the meal. A pair of waiters chased after me down the street.

Daft.

A colleague did it in the '90s. He even went back to the branch and asked if anyone had handed it in.

If it's cash from an ATM, the machine should automatically retrieve it - as long as someone behind you hasn't quickly pinched it!

I told a fella he'd left a wad of notes in the cash machine. He thanked me and offered me a sniff from his coke necklace.

Which was weird.

Guy in front of me left his card in the machine after checking his balance. I could have withdrawn a few hundred pound before chasing him down ( or not) but done the decent thing and shouted after him before he got too far away

Not at the ATM, but I once went in M'cDonalds in Birkirkara in Malta and left £6000 in a bag on the seat when I left. I realised five minutes later, dashed back and it was still there. smokin

The other way is worse - when you take your cash but forget your card. Machine slurps the card back in and you're none the wiser until you need money or to pay for something on the card............ hmmm now where's that card......

I didn’t think the ATM released the cash until the card was removed?

Yes did it a few months ago. Withdrew £30 but walked off without taking the cash.

Hoped it would go back into my account but it didn’t. Someone must have swiped it.

I find cash is just a real PITA these days (and rarely use it).

A few years ago I had £20 cash back from my local Morrison’s self serve till (not sure if you can still do this?) forgot to pick it up and off I went. Drove about half a mile away and remembered so turned back in forlorn hope it was still there on the till. Unbelievably it was! Strangely I felt quite guilty about picking it up and walking off.

ATMs abroad... particularly in places that might best be described as 'developing nations'. These can pose a challenge because many of them tend to operate in slow-motion - painfully so in many cases.

First you think it's gobbled your card. But that comes out so slowly it's like they don't want to give it back. You can hear the money being counted but nothing comes out. Quite a few times, I've assumed something's wrong and go to walk away only to then hear the flap open and the notes appear as slowly as the card but only once did I leave the money there - in Bulgaria - but someone came after me and gave it to me.
