While manoeuvering my hire car in a service station car park I backed into some that was passing behind me the car was a hybrid and I was getting used to and I didn’t even though it was moving. Anyway I’m to blame I was just creeping backwards moved about 3 ft and I reckon I was doing max 3 mph anyway the guy claimed I had scratched his bumper which was total rubbish plus also claiming that I had also damaged his child seat !!!! Really at 3mph plus where I hit was at the back of the car which incidentally was covered in scratches. He was insisting he wanted to put in an insurance claim so to get rid of him I let him take a photo of my drivers licence in hindsight maybe I shouldn’t have done this. Anyway I think he is just a chancer. Any advice on what I should do when I hear from him? I would have thought any insurance company would tell him to take a run and jump but who knows. I guess he might try and use a now win no fee mob?

You didn't "know" you were moving, but the car was creeping backwards and you "reckon" it was doing 3mph? 3mph must've been quite a thump!

When his insurance company contacts you, you'd better get your story straight!

No, why would he do that? He'll just use his insurance company to sort it out with you. And you'd be best advised to give them the details of your insurance company. Then forget about it and get on with your life.

3mph is literally walking pace. I know when Im walking and when Im sitting down.
What sort of car did he have? Just tell him youll buy him a replacement bumper from your own pocket if its a typical 15yo runabout. Obviously dont do that if its some big shiny SUV full of sensors etc.
Ive been involved in 3 carpark bumps since I passed my test, the first was my fault, 6 days after I passed my test. Obviouspy not wanting to tarnish my record I just took it to the nearest repair place, paid cash, and had it sorted ASAP. Cost me £120 iirc. And thats what the other 2 people did when they hit me, paid cash to either a mate of theirs who can paint or the local place that does it. Both times someone hit me was in the same carpark. I dont park there anymore.

Not a lot you can do then. Contact your insurance company and tell them whats happened. They'll fight it out.

As it is a hire car I don't think you have any say in the matter of using insurance or not.

Just give the TP your car hirer details and let them deal with it.

As above though you need to give a coherent account to the hire company.

And full of inconsistencies, because actually you do mention scratches.

Then you say about not thinking you were moving but then that you were doing 3mph.

As others have said if you don't get your story straight the insurance company will have a field day, not to mention the hire car company.

Rule #1.
Get pictures.

Rule #2.
Get your story straight.

Then just give the details to the hire car company & forget it.

Why, oh why did you let him get a picture of your license??????

He now has details of primary ID for you & could do LOTS of harm with that information!

If he was passing behind you then you t-boned his bumper as you reversed ? That he had a seemingly well rehearsed story, already, with a car with scratches in the right place and was insistent on getting a photo of your driving licence all sounds a bit scammish to me, almost has he was looking for the accident to occur.

He pointed to a small scratch on the side of his bumper and claimed I did it then his wife said you have damaged the child car seat when I said you got to be joking they insisted it was damaged which is when I thought I’ve had enough of this I will just give him my details and let the insurance companies deal with it.

How much cash did you offer them OP?

And did you arrange any hire car excess insurance? From my experience of hire car insurance the excess can be up to about £1500 if you don't.

That’s the best way

Sound like common scammers as usual.

Never offer cash, as next week they’ll say the tyre was damaged etc & will come back to swindle more out of you.

Probably claim whiplash too.

Don’t enter into any further conversation with them.

Pass it to the insurers, pay the excess & forget about it.

I have got excess insurance
And 20 quid was my opening offer which was more than generous given the damage was made up but I was a bit flustered at the time, car parking heaving and chucking it diwn with rain

Every child seat I have used, says in the instructions that if it is involved in an accident it should be replaced. Maybe the TP was just being literal.

Can’t see though why this is worth a thread. Hire car with excess cover. Just let the system sort it out.

The car seat thing could be because you are meant to replace them after a crash. However a minor car park bump is no worse than a pothole, in terms of forces on a seat. So no, it wouldn't need replacing due to the incident described.
