Advice from Sheffield PHers
Discussion
At the end of this month I'm starting a new job in Sheffield and so I'm in the process of finding a place and organising all the usual hassles that go along with relocating. What I want to know is, are there any areas of sheffield that I should avoid (don't say all of it) when choosing somewhere to live? I don't want to end up living in the Sheffield equivalent of Moss Side :yikes:
Any advice on any aspect of sheffield is much appreciated. cheers, Roy.

The Manor and Parson Cross would be well worth avoiding. Hillsborough's not very nice, but not fatally so, nicer areas would include Walkley and Crosspool, Broomhill's Ok, if full of students. Ecclesall Road/ Ecclesall Road South are nice enough areas, but a bit sterile in terms of community. If you're well off Dore and Totley are nice
Generally the West (particularly the South West) of the city is good. The East not so.
There is no absolute no-go area, but I would certainly avoid: Manor Top, Pitsmoor, Burngreave.

And if you're really well off I suggest Fulwood/Ringinglow.Really anywhere to the west of town is reasonable.
Thanks for the pointers. Going to start looking in the next week or two. The only times I've been to sheffield is for the occasional night out and for the interviews for this job. I went for a drive round after my last interview (ok, I got lost) and the northwest quarter seemed pretty good. Then again, Whalley Range in Manchester looks ok during the day...... hence the plea for help.
Thanks
Thanks

Basically southern part of Sheffield is much nicer place to live compared to northern part. Steer clear of Manor Park estate.
During A-level geography we took a trip to Sheffield to learn how industrial age & making steel changed the city. One of the tasks that we were set was to walk around certain locations of Sheffield and compare the areas to each other and find out why some areas were more deprived than others. I was dropped off in Manor Park with 2 of my mates and we knew that this area was hell. So to brighten up what would have been a dull, $hit-a-brick day, I called the teachers from a payphone (that was actually working!) and cried for help down the line and then abruptly hung up.
There weren’t too impressed when we finally turned up in the pickup spot 25mins overtime.
I guess you can tell when you're in a dump of an area if you happen to noice that grown men, whilst waiting for a bus, kick the lamppost and bus sign.
