Possibly a daft question but why is it motorbikes are allowed on the road without a front plate but cars must have one?

Front plates were dispensed with on bikes for safety reasons.

They used to have them, running in line with the bike on the front mudguard. They were affectionatley known as "pedestrian slicers". IIRC, they were banned as they caused some very nasty injuries to pedestrians.

Good, innit

Why can't they have ones facing forward and not side ways? Just interested that's all.

Where?!! Over the headlight or across the screen? There just isn't a gap of any size in modern designed bikes. www.sportrider.com/bikes/2004/2004-yam-r1-02-3.jpg|www.sportrider.com/bikes/2004/2004-yam-r1-02-3.jpg

SSssssshhhh... new laws will be brought in to ensure all sports bikes are designed with the aerodynamics of a brick to accommodate a front numberplate...

I believe front plates for bikes were bandied about a few years ago but the DOT rejected the idea. And quite right too.

Yep, and I've stopped more than one car without a front number plate. Keep the plate in the car, as it's just fallen off, hasn't it? Worst that can happen is £30 NON-ENDORSABLE FPN.

Good advice - Hard to explain why both F & R ones have fallen off though!

Unless you end up going to mag's court and face £1000 fine.

Bloke I know has a bike with one incorrect digit. He reckons his lame excuse would be : THEY must have made it wrong I never noticed. What is that worth ? He reckons £30 non endorsable no points fine. (plus any speeding offences they can therefore CLEAR up?)

The incorrect digits thing actually happened to a mate of mine after his car was repaired after a minor rear end shunt. He went back to the garage and they put it right. This was 10 years ago, so not so may cameras then!

In terms of penalty, it would most likely be a £30 non-endorsable FPN, if you couldn't convince the BiB to let you off with either a warning or a VDRS. Another mate of mine accidently had his plates "stolen" after getting a FPN. Proved useful about 12 months later when he got another NIP through from a camera. Asked for photos (delaying tactic) then wrote back saying it wasn't his van, enclosing piccies of his van, minus the towbar and roof-rack he'd removed for the photo-shoot. Backed up by a copy of the crime report for his stolen plates. He's a jammy bugger, but the Tax Raising Pratnership binned his ticket!
