The tale of the heavily used 1.0 Skoda

I do around 20-30,000 miles a year, I have mainly had company cars in during the last 8 years however recently opted out in favour of a cash allowance. Over the last year I’be owned and got rid of:
BMW 435d. Rapid, boring. Awful stereo. Not that comfy.
Mk8 Golf GTI. Comfy. Infuriating infotainment and boomy on the motorway. Infotainment was its downfall.
2015 Jag XF-S 3.0. Impulse buy. An absolute nail. Cabin stunk of diesel fumes and the dealer couldn’t find a fix. Felt like there was an issue with the torque converter so that went. Should never have bought it!
I wanted rid of the jag quick and found myself drawn to the Skoda Kamiq. I have a young family so wanted something practical & comfy. Having lost a small fortune buying and selling 3 cars in a year I needed something I could keep long term with peace of mind of a full warranty, so I bought a pre reg 1.0 tsi manual Kamiq Monte Carlo back in July. Quite the change from my usual criteria of 200+bhp ‘upmarket’ brands.
So, what’s it’s like? Well, I am very impressed. The seats are epic, really work for me; it’s impressively refined on the motorway, the engine doesn’t feel underpowered and the 3 pot soundtrack is better than any 4 pot. The stereo is very good and it’s very practical for us as a family and my job. I’ve done 7500 miles in it so far and I think it’s great!
I’m planning to run it for a few years and take it hopefully to 150k+. I’ll upload details of our adventures for those interested. For now, some photos, I’ve just fitted winter tyres on 16’ steelies which I think rather suit it.

Just helped daughter (young mum with a couple of kids) get one of these, although went for the SE-L, now a run-out model as the very slightly facelifted Kamiq has just been launched.
Her's is the 1 litre manual too. I'd have preferred she got an auto, epecially as the manual is 6 speed, but she wouldn't hear of it, and they're quite thin on the gorund (from stock). Lead time on factory orders is massive.
Our other daughter has had same drivetrain in a SEAT Ateca for 5yrs, now approaching 70K miles.

We bought a 1.0 SE Scala, which I think is essentially the same car, in early March 2020 and it’s been a fantastic car. It was an ex demo with 3k miles on it, and it’s now on 43k. The only issue we’ve had was the emergency call module (common fault apparently), which was fixed by Skoda under warranty. I do all the servicing/brakes etc and so it’s a cheap car to run, and we get around 48mpg. I don’t normally buy cars that new, but when I looked around the Scala was perfect what what we needed.
One of the reasons we chose the Scala was down to the seats. I suffer from a bad back and really need adjustable lumbar support, and the Scala (unlike the Fabia) had really comfy seats.
Like you I’m amazed at how good the 1.0 is - plenty power and the car feels really refined for what it is. There’s also loads of room, which is really handy when we go away with the dog and all the associated stuff.

Yesterday we made the 4 hour trip to Northumberland (non stop with an 18 month old)
Didn’t hang about, outside lane of the motorway most of the journey, 3 1/2 up with luggage and averaged 46 mpg. We even made it up the 3 mile snow covered track to the house! Winter tyres- they work.
Some steel wheel salt patina for the fans!

My mum's probably going to sell hers soon as she's never got on with it. I think she was too in love with the Fabia that preceded it.

The challenge now is finding something she likes to replace it with!

I would definitely recommend the Scala (see my previous post). I’ve done another 20k since then and it really is a capable car for the money, especially the 115bhp 6 speed version of the 1.0 TSi. It feels really solid, the seats are great and I don’’t have any issues covering long distances in it.
