Selling Without New V5

I’m not sure if this is the right place for this as I’m selling not buying. No doubt the mods will move if in the wrong place.

I just applied online to take my private plate off of my car as I want to sell. I’ve paid the £80 fee and got the new number so I can get new plates made. Apparently the new V5 will be sent to me though I don’t know how long that will take. In the meantime can I sell the car? I still have the old V5 with my private number.

The old V5 with the private reg on isn’t valid anymore. It’s useless.

No buyer in their right mind will buy a vehicle without a valid V5.

If you’ve done the transfer online, it’ll be less than a week until you get your new V5.

Agree with above post, since applied online new V5 should be with you within a week (from own experience).

As others have said, it'll not take long, it's usually 3-4 working days between online application and V5 arrival.

I have part-exchanged cars without the V5C in exactly the same situation as you, OP (waiting for a new one after taking off private plate). Dealer took a £250 deposit (i think) until i was able to send the new V5C, which arrived in a couple of days.

Wouldn't expect this flexibility from a private buyer though

Thanks for the replies. It’ll be a trade sale but I can hold on a few days for the V5.
