I use my windscreen blower, and if necessary, back window heater.
Don't set the temp too high as warmer air holds more moisture.
Do you have Aircon? Use this to dry the incoming air.
If all this fails, get some wind deflectors and drive w the windows open 1/4".
Also check car for water coming in.

It's worth checking for leaks. Do you have a damp footwell?

Use AC 'On' all year yound. That's what it's designed for. Lack of use also makes it more prone to issues. Found that out in my naive days rolleyes

I run an Audi with climate always set to AC on and didn't need to have it re-gassed for the first 16yrs.

I've not tried it, but this looks promising... Gyeon products normally well-regarded.

Same here. It rarely gets steamed up, and we live in Weather Zone 4 (NW Wales) so it’s always wet. If there is ever a little misting at the bottom of the front screen, I switch the front screen button on and it clears in a few seconds. (The fan speed for that starts low and increases to almost full speed in a second or two, and is one notch below full speed, quite a good design as you avoid the surprise of a sudden noisy fan speed). Mine is a 335d, so not dissimilar to a 640d. I suspect yours has a leak.

As above OP, I have the AC On all year round in my 640d, it never steams up.

Out of curiosity, why do you not have the blower and A/C on all the time?

Might be worth checking that cabin air filter is not wet or clogged up.
Don't assume it was replaced when serviced, even if it should have been!

As others have said, AC on and never turn it off. Just adjust the temperature to suit, but always keep the AC in especially in winter.

Given how wet it has been, are you bringing lots of moisture in from your shoes? And are any of the drains blocked? On many cars leaves can block drains leading to water ingress. Might be worth checking the boot floor too.

Rubber overmats help during the wet season, wet carpets take ages to dry out if at all during the winter.

Don't assume that because the floor carpet feels dry you have no leakages, slide your fingers under floor coverings to the floor itself to check, rear passenger section and boot and spare wheel well too, check and if needed replace cabin filter it might be full of wet leaves and dirt.

Have used Rain X in a 1974 MGB GT and on the bathroom mirror with good results.

OP - does your AC work? If it's not working (or switched off) then yes your car will mist up like a 1987 Astra hehe

If it is working and on then there is definitely water inside car, or a wet cabin filter. After the initial demist any modern car with AC should stay mist free on auto. It takes remarkably little water ingress to cause mischief.

This, the only cars I have owned which have suffered badly with condensation have been cars where I have discovered leaks. Usually this will be caused by either blocked sunroof holes, blocked drainage holes under the scuttle, blocked aircon drainage pipe or water leaking into the boot.

I can spot these sort of cars a mile off now, walk down my road on a rainy day and every single one will have condensation soaked windows.

The merest hind of condensation on a second hand car and I will refuse to buy it.

Looks at convertible with leaking roof on my driveway

yes

Does the car smell damp or like old tents? Or feel damp when you get in it?

I may be being a bit slow here, but I'm not sure I understand the question, Dan? In order for the AC to be effective, the blower needs to be running? That's what I meant anyway

Yeah, I got that. smile I took what you wrote to mean you have the blower set to zero (i.e. no ventilation) - was that not what you meant?

I’ve never turned the ventilation down to zero in any car I’ve owned (although I’ve been in plenty of taxis who seem to want it turned off at all times), hence the question.

If by blower you mean having it really belting out onto the screen at high speed then I get it - you shouldn’t need to do that as long as the A/C is on and you’re not bringing a load of water into the car with you on a coat or something.

OP definitely has water ingress somewhere. Have a good feel of your carpets, give em a good squidge. Try to remove some interior trim and get some of your carpets up. I bet you’ll find some lakes of water lurking underneath all that carpet & sound deadening
