JLR - Disco5 - am I mad?

I think the answer is yes but will anyone talk me I to it?
Basically have 3rd child on the way. XC90, Q7 and D5 all looked at. D5 has won out for emotional reasons (wife loves it).
I’ve spoken to a few mates who have them and have family members who have them and very little issues reported. But reading the forums, they basically seem doomed to failure. However, so many people drive them and keep coming back for more, I feel like it can’t be that bad. Or can it?
I have unearthed a few dogs even through franchised dealer stock but have put a holding deposit down on a one owner, 30k miles late MY20 car which appears to have a normal service history and no reports of warranty issues (so far). Feel like it’s as good as it can get (for any brand but particularly JLR).
Kind of have to progress today with finance or get off the pot.
I was well up for it on Friday but now having second thoughts. I’m a BMW/Porky man normally but budget won’t stretch to X7 and Cayenne not big enough.
Thoughts?

If you can keep £10,000 in reserve for an engine replacement go for it!
This is one of those cases where, certainly in the case of the Ingenium engines, internet horror stories are borne out by reality. The 3.0d is safer, relatively speaking, so if you're going to do it then stick to those.

I had the Si4 engined D5. Mechanically it was fine and a decent car and I didn’t have to worry about crankshafts or whatever it is that kills the 2.0 diesels. The four pot petrol is actually alright; not as good as the six cylinder cars but infinitely better than the nasty four cylinder diesel.
That being said, it used to go back every couple of months for faults with the s
tty entertainment system. The InControl system is truly awful, whereas Pivi Pro, if you can stretch to a newer one, is fantastic.
I never warmed to the D5 at the time and always missed my D4, but with hindsight I’m sort of fond of them.
For contrast I had a brand new B5 XC90 for a couple of months as a courtesy car. Soulless, nasty engine, s
t and hugely frustrating FWD biased drive system (front wheels used to slip at junctions) and just nowhere near as nice as the Disco. The very definition of a white-goods family car.
That being said, it used to go back every couple of months for faults with the s

We bought a fully-equipped 2019 Sd6 auto (the v6 twin turbo diesel, 300bhp/800Nm) this year and flippin’ love it. Probably 15,000 miles, with a total of about 55,000, without a single issue. It’s a great car to drive and travel in, especially over a long distance with a large load (when we’re not in, or cannot fit in, my Giulia).
Footnote: we bought from a well-respected German JLR dealer which brings a certain confidence of help should it be required.

In a similar position and the Disco 5 popular on the home front for similar emotional reasons with SWMBO. We dont do huge miles so economy not so much of an issue. Would an SI6 (Petrol) eliminate the largest, most eye watering chances of it all going boobs skyward leaving me just susceptible to the more frustrating daily stuff?
Bought a 3.0 HSE Lux for my wife 8 or so months ago. 2018, 60k miles, perfect condition and full spec £33k. Faultless so far. Have a D4 that's now relegated to farm duties mostly but that's been super reliable too. Fully expecting issues and kind of surprised so far. Perfect car for her. She loves it. A fair bit bigger than the D4 and maybe a bit 'light' to drive. I much prefer driving my Cayenne Turbo even though it's 6 years and 100k miles older. She much prefers driving the disco. Oddly the cruise control is super easy. Wifey has never bothered with this on any other car before - finds it too much of a faff and doesn't like the loss of control but uses it on this.
On the whole, really good car. Perfect for the job. Not for me but I do like it well enough. It's now the car we use to drive any long distances although do need to be a touch mindful of where it's parked so that it's likely to still be there. Insurance renewal on it wasn't too bad.
I don't think I need to apply quite yet to Evo as a reviewer of cars but hope this helps a bit.

Really big thanks to the posters who are owners and have had good experiences. I think it’s easy to get distracted by the noise around them.

We're on our second, a 2019 HSE 3.0 SD. it was the only vehicle to fit the bill at the price point - 7 proper seats, comfortable, tows brilliantly, well equipped. I looked at XC90 (too small inside and poor engine in 2.0 diesel form) and Q7 - same re space.
I don't personally think it's quite as well built as previous German cars I've had but it's passable and we've had no issues with both of the D5's that we've had. This one I had from a JLR dealer and they threw in a 2 year JLR warranty, not 1 year so I do have some piece of mind.
The only real downside I can see is that it is a hefty vehicle to be using when we're not in family mode, but when it's doing it's job, i.e. full, on a road trip it's great.

We have had a 2018 Disco 5 TD6 for just over 4 years.
1 minor air suspension fault dealt with under warranty at 3 yrs old, bar that faultless and is used for frequent 2 up horse/trailer towing duties so not had an easy life.
Now on 76k miles….struggling to think of what to replace it with, so will keep until we see which way Defender powertrain goes. We consistently average about 31mpg.
On the insurance, just got the renewal and it’s gone up the same amount as my G21 3 series.
Also had a faultless D4 SDV6 prior…..and to provide a counterpoint, as the same time I had an SDV6 Range Rover Sport which blew its engine at 10k miles.
