I know there's a lot going on in the car market and with the winter coming up and, for weekend cars like the 12C/650S, there's probably be a bit of softening to come, but I'm struggling to get my head round the pricing of some of these.

It's been mentioned sporadically on a few separate threads, but it seems like there's a real cross over between the prices of 12Cs and 650Ss at the moment, in some cases, the 12C being more expensive than it's younger sibling for a similar spec.

Is this because 12Cs have been sitting around for a lot longer and their prices not really moving? Or is it because there are generally more 650Ss in the market? It sounds like the 650S is a better car all round, so is it just the aesthetics (which are down to personal preference) and the "future classic" moniker that the 12C has picked up which are keeping up asking prices? Are 12Cs actually selling at the moment?

I think was 650 was the car they wanted the 12c to be, an evolution of sorts

12C will have classic status, much more so than 650s, so I fully expect 650 prices to fall below the 12C (sadly, as I own a 650!).

You are going to open up a whole can of worms with owners of each car telling you their side of things, only swipe door versions of the 12C are collectible, etc, etc.

The real point is if a couple of thousand £ one way or another is a worry for you then McLaren is not the car for you.

650s definately have dropped and 12c prices softened slightly.

540c is also in the mix with above and some very leggy 570s I have noticed.

You are spoiled for McLaren choice between 68k to 78k.

720s have dropped too . Porsche 911 have had horrendous drops. So in comparison McLarens doing ok.

In 5 years time, who knows where they will be but I cant see them being 60k or less unless they have exceptional mileage or very bad condition.

This is probably as good as it gets to buy in. Buy when others are fearful sell when others are confident is an often used phrase.

Agree.

Buy a nice 12C or 650S for £6/7x and you will hardly lose much money which ever way it goes

All makes sense, thanks and I agree, I think a 12C starting with a £6x feels about right and a 650S starting with a £7x, especially considering a couple of 650Ss have been sold on CC recently for a tad over £70K (one most recent sale has disappeared off their site, which is a bit odd?).

A lot of the 12Cs on autotrader et al have now have been for sale for months. Maybe these were bought at the peak of the market, so there's a bit of a stand off with those. There seem to be more 650Ss coming on though which means there's a bit more competition, but who knows what will happen over the next few months.

CC is not indicative of real time prices,

They have been put on there for a reason and certainly not in the best interests of a purchaser.

The 650S is a more rounded car but the 12c is iconic

The red one has been up for ages. It’s a sign of the times when sales of Thorney approved cars, which will be perfect, have significantly slowed in the last two months.

Or they are priced too high which is a possibility as I think owners set the price?

I imagine customer does set the price, but I'm sure Thorney will give them some input on that. That one has been hanging around for a while, but they have dropped the price recently. It was £103000 until last month, which is simply not where 650S are at right now; even now it's the joint most expensive 650S coupe on the market.

I dont presume any dealer would have a car taking up space if they didnt think the price was achievable. Both time selling for me sor a price was agreed that both were happy with.

My personal view on Thorney cars is they are right at the very top end of the market and my assumption is he puts a high value on his inspection and subsequent warranty, perhaps with justification, but thats down to the buyer to decide.

Think he charges £4k(ish) to sell including 2 months storage. As most of the cars on there have been on sale for that period now, will be interesting to see what happens between now and Xmas.

Top end prices for sure but think the website says “if it doesn’t sell by then (2 months), it’s priced wrong”.

Didn't notice that! I think they might operate a little like RPM technik do (or used to do) whereby the car comes in, has an inspection and any remedial work carried out (I guess at cost to the seller), then it goes on sale. So the seller is probably in for the sale charge and the work that's been done on the car, so maybe that's why the prices aren't really coming down so much?
