Does any one know what rules France has for importing 2nd hand cars from the UK? I may have a chance to sell my S3 to my Father-in-law who will shortly be living in France and need to work out before hand what pitfalls there might be - otherwise I'll be selling it here...

ta,
Steve.

I am currently looking at doing the same with exporting a car to Belgium. As far as I can tell (and I am assuming it will be similar for France as it is EU law) there is no need to pay any VAT or import duty on a second hand car - this is collected in the country of origin if applicable (it is different for a new car in which case it is applied in the country of destination). You will need to convert the headlights to LHD spec and for Belgium you also need a kmph speedo (although I am not sure if your car already has kmph markings in which case it should be ok). In Belgium you are also required to show type approval and send it to the local test centre for their equivalent of an MOT. On top of that Belgium has quite onerous tax laws so the running costs are quite high, so do not for get to check these out as they may surprise you, although I think that France is probably a bit more reasonable.
There is a link somewhere on this site to a French TVR club - perhaps they can give you more information

Good luck!!!

Thanks for the reply, I think it is the detail of France's requirements on used cars that will be the sticking point. I'm sure I've heard that cars over a certain age need to have had any gasket or pad replaced if it were to contain asbestos.
