brake pads

Breaks have always been fine, and I could break as hard as I liked (have never locked up the wheels) without any ill effects.

My pads and front tyres were changed at the last 12k service, and I was told not to do any heavy breaking for 200 miles. So I didnt.

1000 miles later though, when I break really hard, I hear a scraping sound when the wheels go round which after a few minutes dissappears. Why is this? Sounds as if the pads moved a little, is it normal?

Also, when pulling away from cold, I occasionally notice a faint scraping sound which again ... goes away after a few minutes of driving. Is this normal on a cerb?

Did you bed them in correctly, Your garage should have given you instructions on how to this ?

It could be the pads glazing up as mine are doing this as well...

My Pads are Mintex 1144's...

My brakes where perfect until I got some new rear pads put on..... now the banshee effect. Never scraped like you describe.

It may be due to the new pad being larger than the old. This means that it rubs on an aera of the disc which has not worn, causing the rough sound that you say.

Have a look at the disc, you should be able to tell.

I wasnt told how to bed them in, only that I should not break hard for 100 or 200 miles and use them gently. I used them as normal, with no excessive or hard braking. The sound is faint, but can be heard after hard breaking. Dont know how to check them myself, do you have to remove the callipers to check them?

No you just need to check for a raised shiney rough surface near the bell of the disc.

also check the pad size and make sure they dont overhang the outside of the disk. If they do this will also cause the said scaping sound and the outer edge of the disk to wear off at an angle and, as i discovered, with spirited driving will overheat and cause your disks to warp. My pads were paget and are excellent but a little large.

i got my virtually new front warped disks skimmed for £20, carefully filed down the protruding edge of the pads and hey presto its sorted

Where did you get your disk skimmed for that amount?

Stephen, any engineering comapny with a lathe, takes my dad, three minutes a disc.

Austec did mine on the car, which takes a little longer. At a guess about 6 minutes a corner + setup time?

I assume you have either a 4.2 or a 4.5 with tuscan front disks? I thought the 4.5 AP discs couldnt be skimmed?

4.5 with Tuscan discs
