I know I'm just having a bit of a blonde moment here, but the only difference between USB 1 and 2 is the speed at which the devices can communicate - i.e. a USB 1 cable will do the job and let USB 2 stuff work at full speed, right? There is no difference in the quality of the cables - in fact there are only 'USB cables' rather than different standards, am I right?

Reason I ask is that I've just bought a spangly new scanner/copier/printer/fax thingy, 'cept it doesn't ship with a cable. so, I'm planning on hooking it up with one of the squillions of random USB cables I have kicking about.

Yup, any old cable that fits should do the job.

You're right, it's the USB port or device that's 1.0 / 2.0 speed. Cables are all the same.

Well almost....have a look at this thread for more details.

Not all cables are the same.

USB 2.0 cables tend to be a bit beefier cause they're specc'd to handle more current. Using weedy cables can cause strange problems IME.
