The last thread on this is so long ago and I think it deserves a new thread

My car is July 2022 718 GT4 PDK. I have studied my car exhaust sound so far and it seems the exhaust valve only closes from 2600rpm to 4200rpm. Unlike the common belief that the exhaust valve closes between 2000rpm to 4000rpm. Is this because it is a later car (some people have mentioned that the exhaust was modified a bit by Porsche for later 718 GT4.

For those that have put clips around the exhaust valves to prevent them from closing at all? Would this have any effect on a new car warranty or extended warranty. Or would it be recorded as an error on the car ECU? Has it really transformed the aural enjoyment of your car?

There is a cargraphic valve controller sold by RPM techniq with a remote control, it seems quite fiddly to self install based a YouTube video. Has anybody used this, any effect on warranty?

Regarding exhaust modification, so far in my research, JCR or Kline backbox with valve controller makes the sound more high pitched like GT3s but not louder and to get a louder sound something Akrapovic OAP would be needed, but this would be illegal as this would lead to a GPF delete

I wouldn’t mind the backboxes, when suitable, has anyone done this modification? Is it worth it? Any effects on warranty?

All contributions welcome as far as they stay on point. We don’t want to turn this to another 981 GT4 vs 718 GT4 thread

Easy and inexpensive DIY job to clip the exhaust valves to remain permanently open but this results in a degree of droning which some including myself find irritating.

Best to try for yourself and see how you get on.

Lots online and various methods btw.

Would it affect warranty or not?

With new car warranty which you will still have - warranty is not automatically revoked when you install non-OEM part.
In the event of a claim, warranty is only an issue if the non-OEM could have caused the failure.
Each case is evaluated on its own merit and decisions are made at Porsche AG.
Installing non-OEM part will carry a level risk - only you can decide if you can accept it.

With respect to the valve controller - it sits between the OEM control system and the valves - so its operations are invisible to the OEM control systems.
I would only get the 2 mode system. The 3 mode has 'fully closed all the time' which you DO NOT want to run at high RPM, as it will choke the engine and give you problems... so why bother. As has been suggested before committing valve controller you could try unplugging the vacuum lines or clamping the valves open, to see if that changes things to your taste.

Finally for exhaust backboxes... the main considerations are the materials and the design.
Crucially needs to feature x-pipe to merge the banks and the more exotic materials give the higher pitch.

Although I haven't bothered to touch the exhaust on my car, for me the JCR Silenced Valved Race Pipe is the benchmark.

Don't think so.

Ran my 991.1 GT3 from new with open valves no problem tried it on my 991.2 but too droney.

Happy with my 718 GT4 exhaust stock its more about the induction imo but what Tyrone posts makes good sense obvs involves some expense involved depending on your exact requirements.

Bear in mind your relationship with your OPC should you have a problem some are alot better than others re accepting modifications in terms of warranty implications etc.

Not sure how many would bother to go through the whole route, but Porsche AG's decisions on any of these things is not the final one, as they well know. While it's final for whether they are willing to maintain a warranty is one thing, but they still need to have supplied a product that is fit for purpose. I'm pretty sure it's no longer legal to revoke a warranty purely on the basis of non-OEM consumable parts being fitted, as long as they are demonstrably of equivalent quality.

There is also the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for them to reluctantly consider, and if Porsche make any decisions that anyone thinks unfair, there is always legal recourse. Yes, they can make decisions on what they consider to be warranty invalidations, but that does not affect your statutory rights. Unfortunately it can be expensive and time consuming defending those rights, so like most, I try to stay within warranty terms.

Thanks. I actually like the exhaust noise up to 2600 rpm especially around 2000rpm, the cruising rpm on motorways. And when pushing the car, to drive in manual and above 4500rpm anyway.

So I am not dissatisfied with the factory setup of the car but just wondering whether exhaust modifications would elevate the enjoyment to another level.

I’ve got the clamps on my valve controllers and have done around 5k miles with them on.

They won’t throw any warning lights as the valves are vacuum controlled, and all you do is hold the actuator in place whilst the vacuum is applied to the valve. There is no feedback to the ECU to say whether the valve has opened or closed on request. So you don’t need to worry about that.

The clamps can be fitted and removed in less than 5 minutes with one allen key. So if you are worried, you just remove them before taking the car to the OPC. But I honestly can’t see how or why they would reject a warranty claim based on their fitment.

The beauty of the clamps (over just removing the vacuum lines and plugging them) is that you can alter how “open” they are. Mine are set at about 50%, so the system is louder in that normally closed Rev range, but doesn’t drone on the motorway.

Or you can clamp it fully open if you want/don’t care.

You are right that changing the backbox won’t really change the volume of the system. Just the tone. It’s the OPF’s that are the main issue on the 718, and the only way to get round that is with over axel pipes (OAP’s). But then you will need a map or an OBD blocker to stop it throwing faults.

If I was out of warranty, that’s the route I’d go. Standard backbox, OAP’s, and map out the faults.

I've just test-driven a Spyder, this is the only annoyance I could find. Apart from toe/camber probably needing a reset.

So a simple and cheap solution thanks - as found on Rennlist forum too - assume you searched for similar 6mm diameter split-clamps and fitted them around the actuator valve rods under the car, easy to access, and then move them up or down the rod to give required opening to try. smile

Correct. I just ordered two of them from eBay, in stainless.

It’s definitely easier if you have access to a jack and can lift the car up a few inches, but does still require you getting on your back, under the car, to fit them.

TNT’s post shows you how it works, but you don’t need to pull the whole back box off your car to do it. Though o wouldn’t recommend you try it after you’ve just been out for a drive…. smile

I have the Cargraphic valve controller on my 4.0 GTS and it's a great bit of kit. Took my Indi about 40 minutes to fit of which most was getting the roof into service position and removing covers.
I have the 2 switch model which gives you open all the time or off and use the OEM switch.
On motorways I find valves open all the time a bit too much but around town or on spirited drives it makes a huge difference without drowning out the awesome intake sound.
It does also stop the valve rattle sound which seems to come in mid 2k revs, which I guess clamping the valves would also achieve.

You want split ring (2 piece) bearing/ shaft collars.
Like this 6mm ID 2 piece.
The ones in your link are more for hoses and you might run into clearance issues with the tightening bolt on those. HTH
