As the title says, i have a collection of 7 pieces, its worth quite a lot & 4 grail pieces as rolex, brequet & jlc but i am thinking of selling them all & getting a blancpain no rad & a dress watch (not chosen one but poss a brequet or a lange). My thought process is as i get older some of the watches are not worn & i am not getting the joy as i use too & with 2 pieces that i would also describe as grail pieces all bases are covered.

What do you think, has anyone else had similar thoughts ?

The best 50 Fathoms!

OP, I’ve been thinking the same, only I can’t bring myself to sell anything.

Buy 1 half decent watch & an Apple Watch
Nobody will notice or care
Give the proceeds of the sales to family/friends/Coke & Hookers

I’ve recently done similar, Rolex, 2 Omegas, Breitling, TAG and Longines all gone - just a few left.

Wasn’t really wearing them much and just kind of went off them. I wanted to leave them to my son, but he doesn’t seem interested.

It’s kind of liberating, I mostly wear my Mercury Moonswatch now.

I think it’s human nature to collect things as a reward or to celebrate something, but ultimately you realise collecting more of something doesn’t really make you happy in the long run.

May dip back in at some point, but no regrets for now.

If they don’t bring you joy anymore, just get rid of them.

As others have said if you aren't enjoying them then may as well move them on.

My collection was not that significant but I have downsized mine recently and only one I have of note now is a Seamaster 300M I bought for my 40th so on that basis i'll likely keep it but even that is hardly worn.

I'm currently wearing an old G-Shock I keep in my desk drawer because I forgot to put a watch on this morning, I guess my next watch purchase is likely to be an Apple watch, I hate that everyone has one but it is damn convenient mainly for checking notifications

I did the same a few years ago & got rid of my Rolex, few Breitling’s, Bremont & a couple of low value watches. The joy of having a nice collection had worn off, ended up wearing my Garmin watch as a daily for a few years.
The past 18 months have seen me get back into watches but sometimes I do think they’re a waste of money. Most probably better spent elsewhere

I’ve had a go at downsizing a few times.

Got down to about 24 once.

I've done it twice. Each time down from 20-or-so to two nostalgic items and a Garmin. It never sticks. Currently have 7 in the winder, one on the wrist, 6 manual wind on the stand including the two never-sell keepsakes, a Bel Canto on order, a Zenith with a bid on at WC, three in my button-hovering watchlist on C24, two ditto on TZ-UK...and three Garmins. Mrs Cup is also creeping back up, although that's entirely my fault as I keep buying them for her. She looks pleased, but I'm not convinced she really cares.

Nor, I think, does anyone else apart from other sad watch nerds. We buy these things for ourselves as participation medals for the game of life. IF you don't need the medals anymore, flog 'em and be happy. Clearly, I still feel the need to reward myself for all the hard work I claim to do.

A very good friend very wisely said to me about me and him:

“Our trouble is we’re always trying to buy a simpler life.”

He’s not wrong.

ETA I have 10 watches. Having bought three this year I think I’m done in total. I’m not sure about one of them (Scurfa Diver One), which I bought as a holiday watch to replace a stolen Seiko Sumo. So that might sold and something else bought in its place (a sort of low cost revolving door).

I'd hate to be wearing an expensive watch in the the UK these days sadly. You're a target the moment you wear it.

I think if you mean 'London'. Theft from the person of expensive bling isn't a thing in most other cities of the UK unless you push your luck.

I never wear the submariner in summer or with short sleeves anywhere in London or abroad, it’s common sense. It’s a fact of life now, you will be targeted more likely than not if you wear the Rolex. In my field of work things of value being primed and then taken. Rather be safe than sorry. It’s a bit like strapping 6k to your wrist and walking around.

Blancpain comes on in summer and the irony is that the moron who tries to rob you of the Rolex has no idea that the Blaincpain is eons ahead of the Rolex in terms of horology.

Is it really like this now? I've worn various Rolex, Breitling, and Omegas all over the world for years and I don't think anyone has even noticed.

I would not want to get robbed but even doubling the chance in the UK is still a tiny chance and way lower than being a victim in many places watch or no watch and I am typing this in Buenos Aires. Apart from some mid value sentimental watches I would rather lose a watch than a phone.
