After enjoying the Monster meet i was still in high spirits on Sunday, so after a blast around i found the need for a little 'tyre punishment' and did a burnout for only a couple of seconds, after which my engine now has quite a loud tapping noise. Has anyone had this before, is it just possibly something needs adjustment, or am i to fear the worst? Engine still runs ok apart from the tapping. I can't even bring myself to say the 'R' word, let alone be able to afford one! HELP.....

Not every engine noise needs a full rebuild

How many miles have you done since spotting this? If it's still driving after loads, might not be that 7 letter word. Checked the oil recently? Does it alter with revs, speed, or throttle? Is it getting any worse?

If it's not getting any better, I'd get it looked at regardless, mind.

I drove home from Northampton to Grimsby, so quite a few miles and noise is no worse. Not driven it since then though, and as for oil i mistakenly very slightly overfilled before setting off to Snetterton, but drove steady. A very very quiet tapping started after leaving Monster Meet, again after a little acceleration, but was barely noticable above engine noise. After the loud noise started i stopped at a nearby services and oil was only a third up the dipstick??? I topped up to correct level and gingerly drove home.

If you checked the oil from cold & filled it, you'll probably have done a bit more than "very slightly" overfilled it. If now it's DEFINITELY been filled you still find you're getting through litres of oil at that rate, I'd get it booked in for an inspection sharpish.

The valves stretch, or recede into the seats, the mechanics fit shallower shims that dont have enough outer face to retain them, they pop out easily. The fingers then clatter away on top of the spring retainer, destroying both the finger and cap. Dont drive it at all, it will have thrown a shim or two into the top of the engine, it one enders the oilway, it will be sucked up by the oil pump and then seize, this breaks the chain.
If I get time today I will create a diagram and post it!

Cheers for that Justin. My dads a good mechanic, so like you, we're having a bash ourselves. Been reading your posts on the other forum with some fervour, just printed it all off, top stuff. Any info we share will be a bonus for everyone. Sod paying 4k, most of which is labour anyway, and my labour costs nothing. Are you taking the lump out or not?
