Hi Guys

My 17 year old son has started to get an interest in watches after seeing / discussing my humble collection. I want to get him a Christmas present to see how he looks after a watch, so looking at the sub £500 mark, and he mentioned the Tissot PRX. Just wondering if there was any experience in these, and any places to buy which offer any discounts etc?

Thanks

I really like mine. Can you get an auto one in that budget?
The colour on the dial on the auto ones is much more subtle/dark than most pictures would suggest. The light has to really hit it right to make the blue blue or green green.I made a picture of my green one, in most angles it's black or bordering on black.
Other than that, it's a lovely watch, only competition in the space I can think of is the Citizen Tsuyosa range. Tissot feels like the stronger brand but I think it's a matter of preference for looks, the Citizen wasn't available back when I bought the PRX.
CW also has a very nice offering, but is a good chunk more expensive last I looked.

Would agree with Zespak that the dial really does need light to hit it in the right way to show the green. I like this as the watch is then quite versatile.

I feel the bracelet is worth the price of the watch alone in terms of looks. I have the auto and bought it around this time last year and I'm sure there was 25-30% off the RRP.

Yes it is a Royal Oak rip off but every watch brand has one these days and for what it costs you could do a lot worse.

I’d say it‘s more of a Rolex Oysterquartz ripoff than a AP Royal Oak ripoff!

However, I think it looks lovely and £650 for the automatic, looks like great value. Just been on EBay and there are some new ones on there at circa £500

Have one with the light blue dial - really nice and versatile watch that I use for the summer/holidays.

Maybe one of the more traditional colours on the dial would be more of an all rounder, but the design and quality for the price point are difficult to fault.

£234 at the minute and perfect for a 17 year old.

My wife has had a 35mm Gold PRX quartz for about a year now and it's a great piece of kit for the money. Auto movements at this price point are bit 'meh' for me and certainly not worth paying twice the price for, especially on a watch with a closed back case.

I've got a blue faced Quartz and a black faced Powermatic version. Both are fantastic, there are many options at this sort of money but few better in my (potentially controversial) opinion. I'd always go for one on the integrated bracelet as it's such a big part of the look and feel of this watch although the rubber strapped version does look good.

Was thinking Quartz and rubber strap would be a bit more rugged and low maintenance for a 17 year old, and also won't leave him having to resize the bracelet on a regular basis as he continues to grow.

Personal choice of course, as is dial colour. A great starter watch for the money whatever you choose though.

Another good starter watch that's often been compared with the PRX is Citizen's Tsuyosa:

Bought one earlier in the year as I wanted something summery and yellow. A nice little watch. smile

One more vote for 35mm gold PRX - including the comment about the bracelet being worth it alone.
I wouldn’t dismiss quartz - suits PRX more I think and notably cheaper.
While I really like the Citizen, too me they are too big. The day they release 35/36 mm version I will be getting one.

I have two auto PRXs. The green dial and the light blue dial.

Green looks almost black in most situations. Only when outdoors and in sunlight does it show it's true colour.
The light blue is a fantastic colour, albeit more a summer colour I would say.
Both get good use.

IF it is possible, go for the automatic. It's a great watch and good value for money at the price point.

My two:

I have a blue quartz one in my collection (cost me £5 but that's another story).

I chose it over the auto as I didn't like the waffle dial on the auto.

It's a decent watch for the RRP, but I don't see the value in the auto over the quartz unless you love the waffle dial as the case and bracelet are identical.

I was tempted with one of these but ended up going for the seiko sharp edge.

Nice dial on that Seiko.

How does it compare price wise?

£860, so £220 more than the PRX automatic.

Wow is that what they are costing now? I paid less than £600 for mine.

This is the thread I started when I was looking for it, there were some good suggestions in there https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I bought the ice blue automatic to take some miles off my more expensive watches , I’m so pleased with it.

I paid £490ish with a voucher code for H Samuel, it was the same price as mint second hand on eBay, so a very good price.

The movement is silent , strap is nice and hasn’t picked up any desk scratches yet. I wear it daily , time keeping superb.

Overall I can’t believe it’s that good for that price.

It replaced a Timex daily that I had for less than a month before the plastic face was wrecked by the tiniest of contacts with a painted internal wall - basically wrote it off. Rotor was really noisy and strap wasn’t great. It was cheaper, but not worth it. The tissot has sapphire glass so will be more durable.

I’d get an automatic, the waffle dial is really nice.
