So my 675 has finally given me an issue after 2.5yrs.

I have been getting a loud unpleasant creaking through the steering column.

Fired through to Glasgow where it was identified as the lower wishbone ball joint losing its lubrication.

Currently this ball joint isn't a replacement item and has to be a complete wishbone, but McLaren and V engineering are almost up to speed for replacing the ball joint...almost.

Problem is the complete lower wishbone is a P1 item and currently comes in at over £5300 and is on back order with a 2-3 month lead time; the upper wishbone is a normal P12 part and around £1200.

After a chat with the excellent 'flying doctor' Steven at 'V', he had just remedied this exact issue a few weeks ago on another 675.

Anyways, although deemed as a temporary repair as it may last 1-2 years, a grease nipple, new boot and grease solves the issue, and for doing both wishbones as you are as well to whilst you are in there, costs £900.

The ball joints shall be a replacement part at some point next year at both V and McLaren.

Hopefully this may helpful to someone in the future as the bill for replacing both wishbones Inc labour was nearly 10 times that amount.

But this is exactly what McLaren need to catch up with Porsche ... who have specialists keeping the Porsche brand so relatively affordable to run and repair ...

They are.

However, the best bit is that after me taking this to Rikki and Colin the master tech, they liaised with the team at V and will now do this exact fix themselves, and offer it going forward.

That's massive progress for mac main dealers.

Further to my previous post, Rikki at McGlasgow informed me that within a few weeks, they shall be able to replace just the coil spring on the super series rather than the £4k complete hydraulic damper unit as before.

I appreciate that Thorney and a select few other have offered this service for a while, but it seems as though someone at Woking has finally wised up and realised that they have to offer the service of repairing as an alternative to replacing, and at a very reasonable cost.

As mentioned before, this is a huge step forward.

My previous 650 managed to crack 2 coill springs during my ownership, however in that instance the warranty paid up, and another occasion the hydraulic damper failed which I think V Engineering can also repair, so I assume McLaren shall follow suit.

I think Glasgow are possibly the first to go down this route, so if you are in this situation, contact Rikki at Glasgow and he can liase with your local McLaren service manager on their findings.

Hope this helps others moving on.

Seconded, McLaren NEED good indies and at least look at parts prices.
