Hello everyone, I am currently driving a VW polo TDI 1.4 TDI three cylinders, I should have the oil changed soon and I would like to have your opinions regarding the oil. given that it's a small three cylinder, I have to go quite high in the revs especially on the highway so my question is the following, should I put high performance oil like Noleaky 5W30 for example or keep the Motul specific as usual. Thank you for your reply.

Let the garage put whatever they want in,it will be fine.

Don’t turn up with a bottle of NoLeaky, as they will just laugh at you when you have gone instead of actually doing the work

Leave it alone, Motul is one of the best oils you can buy.

amongst other things it's a myth that higher rpm is in itself more demanding on oil. Lubrication is at its most essential not so much when the engine is turning quickly as when it's under load. Normally this will be during acceleration when cylinder pressures are highest, pushing the piston rings against the side of the cylinder and pushing hard on the bearings just like a cyclist who's standing on the pedals to get uphill. It's much worse to labour an engine in too high a gear than to rev it in a lower gear, particularly from a cold start.

A 1.4 TDi is not a high-revving engine. What's the red-line - about 4500rpm? One of my old bikes red-lined at 14,000rpm.

Ordinary oil is more than sufficient for both examples above. Regular changes are better than fancy names.

Lubricant discussions always seem to bring out the opinionated self proclaimed experts with phrases such as…. ‘what ya wanna do is….’
‘VW designers - they know naff all compared to me wiv me fisher price spanner set an 2 week gnvq (in bullstting) from the local college’

The handbook will tell you what engine oil to use and the frequency recommended to change it. Stick to that perhaps?

Most cars in a scrapyard still have an engine that works. It's other parts of the car that cause "end of life" these days. It's incredibly rare even to see an old car emitting blue oil smoke, or to smell oil when driving behind another car.
