2024 sprint race calendar and… changes?
Discussion
Apparently the response to the sprint weekends has been good, so they're adding more!

And looking into how to separate the sprint stuff from the title competition: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.formula1.com/en/l...
Thoughts?

This reverse grid idea seems crazy, especially as they want to move qualifying for the actual race until a couple of hours after the sprint race.
So you put the fastest drivers into mid-pack (Otherwise why bother reversing the grid!) where they are more likely to wreck their cars either through their own or someone elses fault and then have little or no time to get the car ready for qualifying meaning they lose out there as well.

Fair points. Not sure there is a great setup for the sprint weekends. So you put the fastest drivers into mid-pack (Otherwise why bother reversing the grid!) where they are more likely to wreck their cars either through their own or someone elses fault and then have little or no time to get the car ready for qualifying meaning they lose out there as well.
Splitting multiple Quali/Races over different days seems awkward. Doing reverse grids etc. the drivers hate and might cause these kind of issues. There's the issue of limited practice running too, fitting in parc ferme rules.
Maybe they shouldn't have 2 qualis? Just the one for both? Dunno anymore ...
If they're going to reverse the grid then there needs to be some other incentive to go for pole, otherwise it just becomes a race to be the slowest and then get to the front when the order is reversed. The teams will certainly find some way to game it and make it into a farce if they can.
As far as I know, no other series uses a qualifying session result to reverse a grid. They are all done on the previous race result.

They know that no-one really likes the Sprint events, but they do know that both the TV and live audiences are up, and they can use them to extract more money from the promotors.
So now they’re trying to tie themselves in knots to ‘improve’ the weekend without losing viewers - which means four meaningful track sessions across the three days.
The problems IMHO are the Parc Fermé rules, the points system, and the way that penalties get applied across the weekend. Bonus gripe is that they don’t allow a dedicated Sprint PU, free of fuel flow limit so they can be turned up to 11 and we can see the cars actually sprinting.
Personally I’d take the Sprint out into a second championship, and run it in reverse order of the main championship. That stil leaves the 4th session problem though, so perhaps you need to do two sprint races at each event. Any penalties would only ever apply to Sprint events, so there’s more incentive to take risks.

They have already shown how willing they are to engineer drama in various ways. They're probably quite happy to make further changes which will have everyone saying "this is ridiculous, this can't work, this will lead to carnage!!!" Because there's only one way to know for sure folks, tune in

Remove sprint races and remove some races in general. Put them on rotation because it's not sustainable.
I'd rather have an extra team and less races than what we have now. I want to see more drivers on the grid that deserve it as there's not enough seats as it is. If there could be 2 more teams then what be more than enough, as at the moment half of the grid can get points which doesn't feel right.
I think that 2024 is going to be more of the same unless Merc get it together.

Or snipers, pick off the last one each lap?
I'd actually bin the whole thing, move to 2 day race weekends on Saturday (one 90 min practice and Qualifying) and Sunday (reintroduce the warm up, and the GP). Scrap park ferme so teams can adjust cars during the meeting. Let the teams run three cars for practice if they want to test new stuff.

Reverse grid and swap drivers race.
Guy P1 in championship has to swap cars with the driver in P20.
After all a lot of Dutch fans reckon max would have won in a Haas this year so let's see it.
Or just bin the lot of them, until the other teams catch up with red bull it's all a bit tedious.
