Private plate V5 query
Discussion
My other half wants to buy me a plate for Christmas, but we can't find my V5 after a recent house move.
I can get a duplicate from the DVLA for £25, which I don't have a problem with, but as this would essentially become obsolete pretty much straight away when she pays the £80 transfer fee for the new plate, would the DVLA allow us to generate a new logbook with the new registration to save time/cost?
.

The 'plate' will arrive on a retention certificate but you won't be able to transfer it to a vehicle without the long number on the V5 certificate (which has to match with the one on the DVLA records).
If you don't have a copy of the number (presumably not unless you took note of it before losing the form itself) then you will need to apply for a new document regardless.

I thought this would be the case, but worth checking. Thank you.

I tend to take pictures of documents like this these days, because if they do become lost, in this situation you would be fine if you know the number.
A good idea and something I often do at work. Sadly didn't take a photo of my V5 though!resolve10 said:

From Experience rather than ordering a duplicate you need to complete a V62 and post it to get a new V5.I can get a duplicate from the DVLA for £25, which I don't have a problem with, but as this would essentially become obsolete pretty much straight away when she pays the £80 transfer fee for the new plate, would the DVLA allow us to generate a new logbook with the new registration to save time/cost?

We had a similar situation, moved house and could not find V5. I tried to order online but it went to our old address and could not be redirected as it’s an “official document” and returned to DVLA who locked the vehicle record.
