Peugeot 306 Rallye | Spotted

You can't buy the new 208 'Rallye' in the UK. Never mind...

If you haven’t seen the news already: a Swiss Peugeot dealer has revived the Rallye moniker by dressing up a new 208 in the old Peugeot Talbot Sport colours and a set of white steelies. Needless to say, it’s an exceptionally cool-looking thing, and proves the old Rallye formula works just as well today as it did on the 205 way back in 1987. A shame it’s limited to the Swiss market, then, though you’ve got to expect that a Peugeot dealer in the UK has taken note and is (hopefully) working away on a version us Brits can get our mitts on.

However, at the risk of sounding like a colossal killjoy, it’s not a proper Rallye. Not least because it’s a dealer special, but it’s essentially a bog standard 208 with some stickers and those retro wheels. Although its 1.2-litre three-pot engine produces a Rallye-esque 100hp and comes with a six-speed manual, it weighs exactly the same as a standard 208. So while some of the old Rallyes could get away with having meagre power outputs, they had a lot, lot less metal to shift along. Of course, we’ll take it if it ever crosses the English Channel, but we’re still waiting for a proper Rallye successor.

Specifically, a successor to this: the Peugeot 306 Rallye. Ironically, it’d be reserved for the UK market only and, unlike the 208 homage, would feature all the weight-saving measures expected from a Rallye. No electric windows, no air-con and less sound deadening helped shave anywhere between 16kg and 65kg from a GTI-6 depending on your source, while cloth sports seats and a plastic steering wheel added to the Rallye’s rudimentary appeal.

Funnily enough, the 306 Rallye actually broke from tradition. Prior Rallyes weren’t as powerful as their GTI counterparts, and the 205 and earlier 106 variants have to be properly ragged to get up to speed. Meanwhile, the 306 gets the same running gear as the GTI-6, meaning two whole litres of naturally aspirated four-cylinder rortiness and six speeds of manual cog swappery. There’s 170hp on tap, which is loads more than its Rallye predecessors and, presumably, enough to exploit the agile platform below without bouncing off the rev limiter.

You already know it’s a legend, and you probably know used examples command a serious premium because of it. Matt Bird likes to remind us he paid £1,700 for his ten-or-so years ago, but even a leggy one will set you back five times that these days. This car is one of the more cherished examples you’ll find out there, with no signs of peeling lacquer or stickers, and a chunky history file documented by the three previous owners. Plus, it’s recently had cambelt sorted, too, so you can get to work on upping the current 65,000-mile tally.

Interestingly, Peugeot only made 100 black examples of the Rallye from a 500-strong production run, making it the rarest of the three colours available. Not that there are many of them left, with HowManyLeft putting the figure at 83 currently on the road and over 200 SORN’d. Ready for the price? It’s £14,995. We’ve certainly seen more expensive ones on PH, and while it’s not the cheapest either, it’s looks to be as box fresh as a near-25-year-old car can be. Still cheaper than a 208 ‘Rallye’, and at least you can actually buy this one…

While I'm sure it's a fantastic car in its own right, I've always thought of these as the weakest of the Peugeot "Rallye" models, as it wasn't a proper homologation car like the 205 and early 106. Still a lovely thing mind, and must be rare with that mileage now.

A motoring regret is not buying one of these or a Clio 182 when they were dirt cheap. Couldn't look past the straight line performance (on paper) difference against comparably priced E46 BMW's. And how horrible the cabins looked and felt after.

Can't complain too much as did have a string of 6 cyl BMW's whilst they were cheap. Lovely things.

I agree with the above poster that these were a little less authentic and true to the rallye ethos than others. Whilst I appreciate it was cheaper than the gti-6, it was barely any lighter and I’m not convinced it makes for a better car. The plastic steering wheel is also inexcusable.

We had 2 in the period. Brilliant cars. Full stop. :-))

If you look at the speedo, showing 140…

The little red needle, would go quite far past that marker…

I don’t think I am the only owner / pilot / tester in period to get much better numbers than stated by the manufacturer…

Light, a chassis that really smoothed and protected you as you made progress, the only car I ever got ‘lift off oversteer’ (by accident if I am honest) on a the road - different times…

This looks like very good value for money - if it checks out…

It's literally just a poverty spec Gti6, but it did have nice stickers!

The White one I sold in 2015 for £1500 was recently for sale at £8.5k, wonder if he'll get that?

The horsepower output of these and their GTi stablemate seemed enourmous back in the day, when so many hot hatches that were considered quick, had somewhere between 90bhp to 120bhp.

Can't say they have any appeal to me now mind you. But this is clearly a car that will sell on nostaliga, probably to a former owner wanting to get back into one.

Looks a nice one anyway. Hopefully it'll make somebody happy.

Poverty spec steering wheel & no air conditioning in a Black car in the typical summer's we get now. No Thanks!!!
Sooner go for a GTI-6 with a AC & leccy windows.

I went GTi-6 back in the day and I loved that car, the steering feel, ride on rough Yorkshire dales roads, and balance was terrific. Mine wasn’t terribly reliable even back in the day though, I had a succession of electrical maladies, a faulty brake servo and other issues that tried my patience, so maybe all these years later buying a Rallye with less stuff to go wrong would be the better bet?

Looks in very good condition and will be more fun to drive than any modern Hot hatch.

If I had the garage space and available funds, it would be a great car to own. Though if anything goes wrong, parts must be an issue these days?

Great cars, this looks a cracker. Whilst on paper it seems expensive compared to other cars of its ilk, I think it's a decent price to pay for a little nostalgia. Good spot!

I had the XSI back in the day and it was a good blend of handling and power, I think it had these seats and cloth too.

never got the whole Rallye thing (or Clubsport really) - yes it shaves a little weight but it just seems like a poor spec version of whatever the car is, i cant imagine the handling and driving dynamics are worlds apart from the one with a bit more sound deadening

But the 306 GTi-6 A/C "never ever works", if 99% of the For Sale ads are to be believed!

Agreed would sooner save money and get a GTI instead, the same car for all intents and purposes - a good condition one still drives well even now.

Had one as a company car, (dealer chain) but we found a buyer desperate for one so i gave it up and had a GTI6 instead, which proved to be a better car all round. Handled better, more kit etc, in fact the GTI6 was (and i reckon still would be) a proper laugh.

Still, nice to see a ralley.

Had a 205 gti back in the day and was considering swapping for a 306 gti6.
Get the nostalgia for this but wouldn’t buy it as either my only car or part of a collection. Just not special enough.

And enough with the ph sycophancy about that load of bilge dealer special rally. It’s a nothing car and a no story.

Hmm, I normally think the 306 is one of the best looking cars from that era, but they really don't work in black.

True story went to the 306 rolling road day back about 20 years ago almost.
The S16 I had at the time made more power than the Rallye that was there.

Would I pay £15k for a Rallye, Well one was for sale at the main dealer in the 2000’s and it was a lot less and as a few people above say why not get the GTI ?

Bit like the 106, I traded my rallye for an xsi with the extra goodies !

Because of the extra weight or just a better example of the model?
