Puzzling how some shootings make the news and the majority don’t.

Upper Clapton to Lower Clapton was well known for murders in 2000's. I can remember discussing it with a work coleauge back then when we heard that someone was thinking of moving there. Named murder mile. Nothing new.

I appreciate it doesn’t have the “glamour” of a shooting but there was a stabbing at Sutton train station (an outer South London borough that rarely makes the news as it’s just a dull commuter suburb) last night resulting in the lad dying. The train station is closed even now which must have buggered things up for thousands of commuters, the main road remains closed and dozens of businesses couldn’t open their doors this morning but while that Hackney story remains prominently near the top on the front page of the BBC news website (for example) you have to really dig down into the bowels of local news to find mention of the Sutton murder.

Perhaps sending journalists out that far is a bit too much trouble? I dunno. Come to think of it the Croydon girl stabbing (neighbouring borough with far greater knife/gang problems) gained enormous traction.

Sadly if it's a lad it only deserves a brief mention these days.

It's far rarer for the victim to be a woman, especially from a shooting

Liverpool has upped the trend lately, well done!

You really need to dig into the figures rather than take a headline as gospel

In many areas most homicides are domestic related rather than gang related

Certain areas of the inner city have the opposite ratio to other high homicide areas

There’s a big difference in “safety” between women being murdered in their own homes and random/targeted gang murders in the street

Also the advances in emergency medical treatment at scenes as well as in A&E have meant that many who 20 years ago would have died in gang violence now survive

Certain areas of London have very serious gang issues the areas of north Hackney and South Tottenham being right up there

It is better and safer today than it was a few years ago mainly due to some excellent Police work interdicting the gangs
