Behold the all-electric Morgan XP-1

The three-wheeled Morgan EV returns, now based on the Super 3

Remember the Morgan EV3? Hard to forget given how it looked and what it promised: an electric Mog in 2015 wasn’t so much futuristic as out-of-this-world extraordinary. Ultimately it didn’t happen, development halted in 2018 owing to contractual disagreements with powertrain supplier Frazer Nash. Back then the official line was that Morgan would regroup and gain "more EV know-how inside [its] Malvern headquarters". And that’s exactly what they’ve done: say hello to the Morgan XP-1, the first-ever car made at Pickersleigh Road with Morgan’s own powertrain. An electric one, no less.

This is a test bed for the moment (hence eXperimental Prototype 1) and isn’t actually slated for production (boo), though Morgan does suggest that it will ‘provide key information to Morgan’s engineers and designers as they embark on the development of the company’s first production electric models’. Having been in build for a year, XP-1 will now commence testing for the next 18-24 months.

It’s easy to imagine strong demand for the car as is. While clearly derived from the Super 3, there’s some EV3 influence in the design as well, most notably at the front end. Interestingly, too, Morgan suggests that in the pursuit of better range it has managed to improve drag coefficient over a Super 3 by a third. The interior has also had an EV refresh, though will continue to evolve as designers and engineers ‘gather feedback on how users interact with the vehicle, and the best way to communicate key vehicle information in future sports cars.’ For now, there are some smart new displays, including battery and motor temperature, plus a chilli that sits above the range readout. Any guesses on that, educated or otherwise, are welcome.

Obviously it's underneath where the XP-1’s most significant technology lies. The battery, motor and inverter are all Morgan’s own, built specifically for this car. An entire vehicle toolchain for this car has been created by the engineers, which will be employed for future Morgan EVs as well. It means the factory will know which powertrain parts are required for which electric powertrain, plus assist with things like the range prediction algorithm and even the drive modes. Which might explain the chilli in the dash. When the tech is proprietary, there’s freedom to do exactly as you wish with it - just ask Tesla.

Freed from the constraints of the Frazer Nash deal, Morgan has gone all-in on electric learning. The XP-1 press material states that the ‘extensive process of workforce training and infrastructure adaptation’ has already begun, meaning the traditional production methods can be retained with the new technology. As well as that, an old school Morgan experience is promised from whatever the production EV, taking learnings from this prototype, becomes: ‘Maintaining the principles of being lightweight, analogue, engaging and most importantly, a joy to drive are key to the future product strategy of Morgan’s electric future.’ Once more, the XP-1 already shows a lot of promise already, based as it is on the Super 3’s monocoque. And that’s an absolute hoot.

Owing to its status as a prototype, there have been no fixed stats issued yet on things like battery size, power, charging or range. What makes the XP-1 significant, as well as looking as cool as it does, is that it proves Morgan is capable of and committed to electrification, no longer reliant on third parties. Morgan’s CTO Matt Hole added: “We are immensely proud to be sharing XP-1 with the world and showcasing some of the first-class engineering that takes place behind the scenes at Morgan. As we embark on our electric journey, this prototype will become a focal point of the engineering and design process, providing a wealth of insight and helping to build up our in-house EV capability. Expect more in 2024 - best get that Morgan Sunday Service sorted pronto…

Not as good looking as the EV3. And I get that this is effectively a Sunday morning toy but a 100 mile range just wouldn’t work for me (having just rented an i4 I got to experience first hand both range anxiety and that the charging infrastructure is far from ready).

I don't get the point of this just yet. 100miles range may be a tad short (150 would work) but I suppose that's not the point of the vehicle.

To be fair I'd never be in the market for any Morgan anyway as I'm not into retro looking with seriously compromised performance.

I find the infrastructure is fine for my needs as an EV driver. I'm SE so maybe up North it's different.

Not sure this makes sense to me.

Yes the performance will be fun but surely the 3-wheeler's raison d'être is harking back to yesteryear with the visceral experience only an ICE can provide.

Wow they really went for the Renault Twizy market. All 4 of the owners were crying out for something less practical, I'm sure.

Even for a Sunday toy, 200 miles is the minimum for me. 150 miles (which is really 120, especially in winter) in areas of poor (ie Welsh) charging infrastructure is a 40 mile trip and back before you panic about running out of juice which simply isn't enough. I lived 18 months with an EV driving weekly into Wales and even then, 200 miles range on a day-trip was challenging. I do like it a lot but with current battery technology, they aren't going to back enough range into a package that small (or into any Morgan for that matter).

100 mile range, that rules out fish and chips on the coast unless you already live there! Thats no doubt a real world 80 miles before cacking yourself, if it hasn't flipped over already and taken your face off!...

So many car enthusiasts drive well under a 100 miles when they go out for a run, so this Morgan should be fine.

On a taller journey a well deserved rest every two hours or so should not be a problem...

I like it and in my early 00s dreams I really thought commuting would look a bit like a city packed with Smart Roadster-ish vehicles, probably electric.

Well, this three-wheeler suits that vision.

Of course it's never going to happen because Europe and China need to earn money and do just that by building huge EV cars... And selling them to an audience that never begged for these. Used EVs are a waste problem, because the market is told The Next One is charging faster, has a better range and is the one to buy.

I cry... But I smile when I see this cute little Moggie.

Autocar are reporting it as 150miles range. Their article appears to be first hand rather than regurgitated from a press-release that doesn't give any figures.

It also says that they are developing the range prediction algorithm, and as someone who works in the EV space knows that its hard to do and often results in an underprediction until you reach high states of charge.

For such a small company, Morgan is very forward thinking, despite the perception that they are stuck in a time warp.

Like it.

Yes, a big throbbing V twin up front is nice, but you have to look to the future.

I do like a Morgan and have had a couple - but never a 3 wheeler.

I tracked a 3W at Goodwood and have done a few road miles in one too and it felt very sketchy at road legal speeds. It makes me wonder how an EV version would feel with all that extra torque?

As i've said all along, that's why the seating position is so atrocious on this generation on 3 wheeler. And unfortunately, the reason why Feddie Flintof's head was above the roll bars in the one he was driving for Top Gear. Trick of the photography or does the roll hoops look taller on this prototype?

Regardless, I wish Morgan well with it even if the driving position isn't for me. A 100 -150 mile blat in one of these is going to be fun even without the aural pleasure.

I won't be upgrading from my big, throbbing V-Twin!

Electrifying the Super-3 seems less sacrilegious to me compared to the old Three Wheeler as the EcoBoost engine is very forgettable.

That’s rather lovely, and as you say would be sacrilegious to scrap that particular engine for an electric powertrain.

Hope the batteries of the EV version drop the centre of gravity enough that a large human, say a professional cricketer, can’t roll it over quite so easily when hooning around.

Morgan deserve credit for putting resource into this and trying to come up with workable solutions. Dismissing it when they have only just unveiled the first test vehicle is just silly. Give them a chance for God's sake.

Given how much of a mess the petrol Morgan 3 wheeler can apparently make of your face, dread to think how much worse it'll be with a load of batteries in the floor ready to squish you like a pancake.

I can't possibly entertain this concept. It needs at LEAST 600 miles of range and gull wing doors. Fools at Morgan for trying to create something joyous and fun. I like my EV landscape bland and my heavy metal loud. 🤟🏻
