I need to change the battery on a 2008 BMW 118d. I've got a new similar AGM battery sorted from Tanya.

Do I need to do any reprogramming or registering to tell the car its got a new battery or can I just swop it and it'll be happy?

If it's an AGM battery, it's *likely* it's got an IBS system and so yes, you need to tell the car it's got a new one (and what it is, if it's different from standard).

Which model exactly? An assuming E81:

IBS fitted if:
CO2 package
or
Auto start/stop function
or
Brake Energy Regeneration
or
Navigation system Business
or
Navigation system Professional
or
Preparation f mobile phone cpl. USA/CDN

Its an E87. It's definitely got stop start, don't actually know about the rest!

Keep the car powered (from a third battery) whilst you swap the old for the new, ideally via the EOBD if you can beg borrow or buy the adapter lead, or to the jump-start terminals under the bonnet, or by croc leads to the battery terminals themselves... in which case be extremely careful that that they don't get knocked off.
And remember that the battery live lead will be live (!) so don't let it touch any metal part of the car.

That sounds doable, thank you!

Car will work fine if you swap it without doing any coding/registrations.

Later down the line however, the vehicle will not be using the battery optimally and hence battery life will be reduced and will need to be swapped again.
These codings all have to do with efficiency.
Registration tells your car the vehicle has a new battery, if not it assumes it has an older battery which is weak and will hence charge it more. This isn't good for a new battery which does not need the additional charging.
