Well... I'm not going to be on here much for the next few weeks as I had a hernia operation yesterday and my PC has decided to go tits-up convieniently at the same time (knackered vid card).

As I can't move much, the only way I'll be able to use the net is on my dad's pc, and I only get the use of that once in a blue moon, but hey - it could be worse!

Hang on, who am I kidding - it is worse!! I can't drive anything for 4 to 6 weeks, I can't get jiggy for 4 to 6 weeks, and I've got to wear DVT stockings for a week too!

I'm gonna see if I can acquire the funding to buy a PSP though, so that should keep me amused at least!

The assortment of painkillers I've got seem to be enough to sedate a small army, 500mg paracetamol, 400mg ibuprofen and some other stuff that makes you feel woozy, sick and gives you the s*its - I guess I could sell that to the local chavs!!

Every movement is painful, sitting up, lying down, walking - absolutely everything! I haven't dared try dropping the kids off at the pool yet but it is only a matter of time, the nurse said that if it doesn't happen within 3 days, it's a tube up the arse and I get flushed out - not what I want to happen!!

I've got a nice 4-5inch slice across my abdomen where I've been prodded back into position, and a bit of mesh keeping it in place, and since every body movement goes through that area (even just twisting to look at stuff) I've spent more time wincing than I have doing everything else... walking makes me feel like I'm 74 not 24!!

Still, on the bright side - I've got 6wks off work!...

Oh yeah, one other thing - general anaesthetic is mental!!! bit cold, funny taste, ooo everything's swirly and you're out... awake to asleep in 15 seconds flat!

Thanks for the insight. My dad's in for a hernia op in a couple of weeks and is a little nervous about it. Did they keep you in overnight or were you in and out the same day?

In and out as a day case matey...

It's really not too bad in the hospital at all - I had a private room and so on (and this was on the NHS too, no private medical care here!)

He'll be provided with a gown and so on, but you'll be sitting around until about an hour before he goes in. A nurse will come down and ask if he wants to be wheeled to the anaesthetic room or if he wants to walk, I chose to walk as mine wasn't painful (it was inguinal, and as such just made it look like I had three testicles!) then he'll get put on a trolley, wheeled into the anaesthetic room and that's all he'll remember. I got a needle in the back of the hand and first got plugged with morphine, then the anaesthetic - as I put in the other post, 15 seconds and you're out, no drama or anything like that...

The next thing he'll know is that he is in the recovery lounge and that he's going to be given some additional pain relief after the op. I can't remember moving from the recovery lounge back to my room but I can remember being moved back into bed, from there on - it's just a case of lie back and sleep off the drugs - I was in theatre for two hours apparently, although it was only meant to be for one, so it must have been a bit trickier than they originally envisaged.

After a few hours, the nurse will come round with some food (probably just a cup of tea and some toast) and he may get a bit more pain relief (I had ibuprofen as the wound was still painful) and he'll probably doze off again.

Before the hospital discharge him, they will want to see that he can stand up and move around. When I did this I went as white as a sheet and had to sit down, then I had another bit sleep, moved back to the bed and slept a bit more - I think that was just personal reaction to the drugs though. After another hour or so I was ok to walk around (and even said I was up for walking out the hospital but the nurse was having none of it - so I was wheeled to the exit!)

I eventually left the hospital at about 6pm after getting there at 8am, got home and immediately had another kip as the anaesthetic was still doing it's thing. You're allowed anything to eat and drink after the op except alcohol although I thought it best to stick to something light (soup and toast), I munched a couple more painkillers and then went to sleep for the night.

Today, the district nurse came around, changed the dressing and gave me a time to get to the clinic to have the dressings removed completely (about a week or so) and that's literally all there was to it.

I have been told to move around as much as I can stand as even though I've got a pair of DVT stockings on, you can still get blood clots and they can be fatal...

The nurse also told me to get into a routine of munching the painkillers, rather than when I feel pain as that would slow me down and make me less likely to walk around - I've been given 100 paracetamol, 24 ibuprofen and 28 dihydrocodeine (these are the ones I've been told to leave unless it gets really unbearable) - the paracetamol can be taken anytime (2 in 6 hours max) and the ibuprofen 3 times a day after meals. If anything it'll keep me floating!!

I must admit, I was crapping myself on the runup to the op, but it's been a lot better than I thought it would have been - really there isn't anything to worry about other than feeling like you've been kicked in the goolies for a few hours after you come round, but as I say - the morphine saw to the fact that I didn't care about that!!!

He'll be fine

The dihydrocodiene is meant to "play havoc with your bowels" according to the nurse, and she did say I may need the laxative so it may be the bunger-upper and not the free-flow'er! I'll leave that to the PH docs to discuss - I'm just going to avoid them unless I need them!

You don't need to have money to buy stuff.

www.kayslifestyle.co.uk/psnlnet/psnl_content/recss05_psp.aspx?brand=KaysLS&cat_id=16033&zone_id=0&prod_id=0&offer_id=X

Sony PSP £179.99 less 10% if it's your first order and 40 weeks 0% credit.

That's only £4.04 a week. Hernia-tastic!

Thanks Dave. I'll pass it on to my dad

Out of interest, I gather hernias can be hereditary. If so, how does one reduce the chances of developing one later in life?

Have you not been told to take 1/2 an Aspirin everyday??

Would've thought this might reduce the risk of DVT??

lol @ hernia-tastic (even though laughing BLOODY hurt me, you git!!)

I've had enough stuff on the never/never that I don't want any more, I'm going to try the bank of mum & dad first, then I'll hit my own fundage if I get no joy!

believe me - you will know when you get a hernia... the proper ones (femoral, hiatus etc) are the painful ones apparently - they're the ones that are caused by a tear which abdomen then escapes through... mine, being inguinal was more a defect than anything else, in that the inguinal canal didn't close up when I was a kid (after the pods had descended) and I was one of the 40-ish percent who has bowel make a break for freedom via that hole, into the scrote! Mine wasn't painful unless I sat in an awkward way, and it began to trap itself - there's no mistaking it though!

KITT: I'm not sure how you can reduce the risk, as I say the one I had, had a 40% chance of happening - or that 40% of blokes can develop it. Ideally I'd say that if your job constitutes heavy lifting etc, then you're in more risk of developing one than if you were sat at a desk for the rest of your life etc.

Dave: I haven't been told that tbh, but it may be why I've got 100 paracetamol tablets to munch on... I need the excercise anyway!!

You will have constipation from DF118's if you take them for more than a week. If you need them for several weeks you may have withdrawal symptons as they are addictive also. Work wonders for killing pain though, although don't expect to be able to drive

Had the hernia repair op myself a few years back. It was bloody uncomfortable for a few days, but it soon became less painful to get around. Doc signed me off for two weeks and that was plenty.

The op was no prob. Like you say, in and out day case. I did end up staying for one night because I got rather ill on the general anaesthetic. Other than that a walk in the park (or rather a hobble!).

CB Dave, I've got 3 knacker syndrome, and mines being sorted next Monday, after reading your story I'm now crapping it. I'm having mine done with BUPA, and they reckon I'll be sorted in a week. Somehow I think they're telling me porkies !

On the upside I'm looking foreward to a new lease of life, and not having to push my guts back in every time I cough/fart/do rude things !

I seriously wouldn't worry - provided you keep on the pills it's not bad at all!!

You'll sleep through the first day pretty much, and then the rest of it is all easily bearable with the painkillers... I had my first proper walk around today (fruitlessly searching for a PSP!) and although it was a bit strange, it wasn't uncomfortable and certainly didn't stop me from being mobile!

Don't worry - it'll all go fine
