Lately (last few years) the amount of signs I’m now seeing that state for your safety or safety reasons has gone mad, not only in their quantity but reason for use.

It’s like companies are now using it for everything and sometimes I reckon just to save cash.

Saw this on the A1 today. Apparently not using street lights for safety reasons. I’m sorry but since when has not using street lighting at night been safer than using them. Surely this is just about saving cash.

Reminds me of the McDonald’s apple pie and caution maybe hot. I bloody hope so.

What other stupid for safety reason signs have people seen?

Completely agree with you, the H&S argument trumps everything and it’s gone too far.

The more responsibility the state takes from the populace the less able they are to exercise responsibility for their own actions.

How many times have you sat at lights outside of peak rush hours with no one at any of the other roads to the junction. Why do we need to sit there, just put the lights to flashing yellow and everyone can use their own judgement and make the junction work.

When the shopping centre multi storey was being worked on they had earplug dispensers with a sign that read "caution, earplugs are not for consumption ''

Whenever you see something like that, it’s usually because someone has tried to do exactly what is being warned against.

It's the big red "Footpath Closed" signs that get me, yeahh I can see that the footpath is dug up, with the big and obvious red barriers surrounding the hole, just what is the point!

You’d be surprised how many pedestrians completely ignore the signs /barriers.
Same for road closed..
Usually get a few drivers get out of their cars insisting they need to get through despite the massive hole in the road and the JCB digging away.

That was my thought.

I do agree with the OP though. But we saw during the Covid times that people were prepared to do all sorts of things in the name of "safety"

One of many ridiculous things being "Don't go out into the countryside or park on your own where you'll be socially distanced. Stay in a room, but 2m away from others and open a window to let fresh air in"

And people just complied! And if you dared point out the daft nature of it. You were branded a "covid denier" or "conspiracy theorist" by those who often chuntered on about "if it saves one life"

Remember that if we didn't do anything because of risk, we'd not have 95% of the inventions we currently use everyday. Planes, Cars, Trains, chainsaws, kettles etc

So sadly, nothing about the average IQ in the world surprises anymore

What are you supposed to do with the information on that sign?
It's utterly pointless!

We all know we need health and safety but some of it now beggars belief. We got told we couldn’t use the small 3 tread steps as they weren’t any use as you can only use the first or second step! Sometimes working on lights that’s all we need, but no they wanted us to carry a big step ladder through doorways and into places where it was too large to pull out to use. Said if it was seen on our van it’d be a disciplinary!

We are heading towards Puritanical times.

There are those who wish to save us from ourselves. They are in the ascendancy.

C.S.Lewis said:
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals."

It's the 'claims culture' that's the cause and effect of all this. Nobody ever takes responsibility for their actions anymore, it's always somebody else's fault, and so I'm going to sue you for many millions of pounds, because I can and know my rights. So you end up with absolutely everything dumbed down to the lowest level to cover every possible eventuality so that there's no way people can sue you and win, which basically means that you are not allowed to do anything yourself and you must get a "trained professional" who has done a 5 day course in how to ascend a 3-step ladder.

There is one similar to that near the Porsche dealership in Leeds, it says " narrow lanes for your safety " . How are narrow lanes safer than normal width lanes ?

A guy I used to walk with brought in his own 3 step ladder to help him in his day to day activites. Wasn't really required, he was just being lazy. One time he didn't check the floor and put it down on a liquid. Inevitably it slid out and he went down in a heap. Landed on his shoulder I understand. Which hurt for a while. No breakages or anything. He then sought legal advice and got about £5K payout for accident at work. On the basis that the employer should have stopped him from using unauthorised/unsuitable equipment at work

As a result of this, he was told to take his ladder home. Which he did. And then spent many, many months moaning that he'd had to take the ladder home when it was very useful to him.

This is why H&S end up being a bit OTT. Not "if it saves one life" but "if stops one stupid person from claiming off you"

Our local Christmas fair was cancelled late last night due to the bad weather causing safety issues. We’ve had a bit of rain this morning and the sun has been out this afternoon…..
