This has stumped the collective minds of my local pub for over a week now. It's brass, about 200mm tall, has two pieces of some other metal let in to it, hole all the way through that narrows in the middle, threaded top and bottom. It came in a box of aircraft pars but our in-house 'plane experts think it's not aero related. And it's heavy. Any ideas?

I'm no sailor, but I'd guess at it being from a boat, for wrapping ropes around when mooring.

Looks vaguely like some sort of guide from an industrial knitting or weaving machine. Or a steam powered lady exciter.

Does it stretch at all? It could be a damper for a pressurised system, which allows slight expansion or contraction for temperature changes in a sealed system while maintaining the correct pressure.

Or not.

Doesn't stretch. It's very solid.

My gut feeling says something to do with steam or a pressure system of some sort. I have nothing to base it on though.

That has been suggested in the pub.

The two plugs of different metal could possibly be pressure relief plugs, but I'm not sure the casting would take much pressure as there's only six small bolt holes in the flange..........

I wonder if it’s part of a lamp or something like a hookah. It does look like something from a ship though especially with the base attachments.

It looks like a very large ferrule... for a very big hose.
(The raised ribs would bite into the bore of the hose & secure it.)

NB: Are those silver stickers significant... the top one looks as though it covering a removable section.

They aren't stickers. They are machined in pieces of a different metal.

Perhaps a later development of 'The Ghillie' biggrin
