insurance - no claims and increased premiums
Discussion
Okay, while driving through France last year on holiday I had to get in to a petrol station while towing our caravan and we clipped a car parked in a no parking area - anyway being nice, we found the owner in the shop and to cut a long story we involved the manager and the local police (who were lovely by the way)
We exchanged details and it turns out the car was uninsured
So wind on a few months - we had a letter from the insurance company saying there was a claim on the system - but no information from the French car owner. So no actual claim.
Been told that it sits on the system for 6 months - that happens in January. My guess is no claim will arrive.
I get to some point I will loose / have the next premium affected (but why as there was no claim or money spent)
Recently I have had a letter saying that (mid insurance term) they are putting my premium up by £800
This does not seem right as there has been no claim.
I am away and out of the country at the moment so not had a chance to read the details or speak to them
Any thoughts??
Thanks

You were involved in an accident, irrespective of whether the other party claims or not you were at fault so your premium has increased because your risk profile has changed. We exchanged details and it turns out the car was uninsured

Most insurance companies ask whether you have had any claims, accidents or losses, rather than just if you’ve made a claim.
Agreed that you should not have a mid term hike, is there something that they have found out about you that would have affected their original quote when you took out the premium? If so they could be adjusting the overall cost. For instance, did the accident happen before you started this policy (or do they think it might have?)
Otherwise, I can see no reason for them to renegotiate a contract partway through if you are not in breach of any of the terms.

When does the policy renew? Has it renewed since you hit the vehicle in France? Did you notify your insurer of the incident before renewal? I've never heard of a mid-term premium adjustment due to an accident, so I am wondering about the timeline - i.e. are the insurer correcting a premium which was based on incorrect info, such as not being informed about the accident?
Premiums are not increased mid term unless there have been things like a different car added or change in circumstances /address etc.
A pending claim ( or not ) does not constitute such a change.
As with a speeding ticket which also does need advising to the Insurer until renewal is due.
I also wonder whether the new premium quoted is for the next 12 months cover from when your actual renewal date is ?
