BMW Diesel filter change - Priming after

I need to change the fuel filter on my E70 X5, physically its easy to do but I'm not 100% sure if I can prime the system without the need to plug into BMW software.

Some online sources seem to be saying you can just crank it over but other places advise against this

Has anyone primed the system without software?

I service the brother in laws X1 and i do that by cranking, does take a while though so a good battery is advised.
Ive followed the guides online that suggest leaving the ignition on for a minute etc and none seem to work.
This is for the long cylindrical filter situated under the car, id also advise buying a quality filter as the last one i used was terrible fitment wise.
