Which way would you go? A14 to Bury St Edmunds and then drop down via Sudbury or M11 to Stanstead and then the A12.

That's all for now.

probably the quickest would be A14 to Ipswich, then south on A12. Not pretty but easiest.

I would go down the M11 to Stanstead then across - it has much more dual carriageway/motorway. Lorries + 3 people who don't want to overtake = long single carriageway journey times.

via the A120 - then you can stop off at Coggeshall and have a cup of tea with me

OK, because I'm bored I shoved the route into the online route planners:

GoogleMaps - Cambridge, Bury, Stowmarket, Ipswich.
108 miles, 2hrs 32mins

RAC - Camridge, Stanstead and across.
94 miles.

AA - Cambridge, Stanstead and across.
95 miles, 2hrs 9mins.

Multimap couldn't calculate a route.

I did that with Bury St Edmunds.... It was 97 miles so it's a very close call... Hence the enquiry for local knowledge. If I was in the Porker, I'd probably go via Sudbury as it's a nice road, but as the box I need to carry is too big to fit in I'll probably have to go the boring route

Only via Sudbury if you aren't in a hurry. It's a roadworks mess right now!! I'd go to Stansted and along the new A120 to Braintree, then the only slow bit to Colchester...(stopping off in Coggeshall for tea, obviously).
