Audi RS3 Sportback (8P) | PH Fleet

Tuning a fast Audi is exhausting work...

By a margin, the main appeal of an Audi RS3 is that absolute peach of a 2.5-litre five-pot turbocharged engine. You can charge around the countryside channelling your inner Walter Röhrl (or insert your favourite Audi rally driver here) to the intoxicating warble and it never, ever gets dull.

Factory exhausts are generally a bit muted for my liking, though, so my first phone call post purchase was to Milltek. I opted for a cat-back stainless steel non-resonated system (no central silencer) with titanium tips. The system is valved so it works exactly like the OEM exhaust on the Sport button, keeping the valve closed when off and opening to unleash the full soundtrack when on.

The resulting sound is, in my humble opinion, perfect. The volume of the Milltek system with the valve closed is probably equivalent to the OEM system with the valve open. Perfect for motorways and daily driving without scaring small children, in other words. But the fun really starts with the valve open, the previously muted five-pot melody unleashed at an enjoyable level without being deafening. That my three-year-old laughs every time we accelerate suggests I’m not the only one enjoying it.

Thank you to our friends at the Revo Performance Centre who fitted it for me. If you buy a cat-back Milltek exhaust system from them, they’ll fit it for free at their HQ in Daventry, so it’s a no-brainer. They tried to tempt me into a Stage 1 remap at the same time, but I resisted (for now) as I wanted to get the handling and braking up to scratch first.

Going back to the five-pot, it might have won the International Engine of the Year award for nine years running, but it’s not without its faults. Carbon build up in the inlets is problematic across Audi’s direct injection engines and well known in the 4.2-litre V8. Let this build up too much and your valves will seize, and you can say goodbye to your engine and your holiday fund for the next couple of years.

The solution is walnut blasting, and with no record of this ever being done on my car, I paid a trip to The Turbo Unit in Fazeley, which is a very well-regarded firm in the RS3 community. They recommend walnut blasting every 30,000 miles and looking at the state of my inlets, I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer - £500 well spent.

Something else Ben at The Turbo Unit flagged is the injectors; for the 8P RS3 they were made with plastic baskets, which can deteriorate and break down, again with engine-ending potential. The options here are either the latest generation of injectors brand new from Audi for circa £1,250, or to rebuild existing injectors with metal baskets for £500. I opted for the latter.

An expensive first few months then of RS3 ownership, but it’s already surpassing my expectations and is hopefully fighting fit now for a long time to come. Next stop is getting some Black Friday bargains fitted - more on that next time.

I don't think I've ever seen one charge around the countryside, if you'd have said city centre I could relate.

Certainly one of the sweetest sounding engines for sure and with its good looks and practicality, very tempting smile

Took a moment to realise what I was looking at, but the volume of grot on the valve stems is something else, astonishing on a modern engine...

Putting an upgraded exhaust on a performance car is something I've done a few times over the years, so I definitely approve of this move for sure. Enjoy the enhanced noise! thumbup

Quite the opposite infact. Normal on modern engines.

Good work, although I wouldn’t have been able to resist the remap!

Be interested to know how you get on with the Milltek. In the fk8 world the welds have been a bit suspect, bits rubbing against heat shields and owners have even been advised to drill a hole in the back box to let water escape…of which there was a lot. A reason I went Remus

So refreshing to see that discreet dual exhaust, rather than the gigantic ones now fitted to the current RS3

I remember wanting a Remus exhaust big time years back. However I couldn't afford one at the time, so I always ended up going for a Magnex or a mongoose instead. But the Remus was the one I really wanted though for sure. cool

As mentioned prior a few times by others. Love content like this. I’ll be especially keen to hear about how the chassis and brake mods develop. Maybe find an antidote to those pesky Audi bingo phrases! Stiffer rear anti roll bar perhaps? Might dial a bit of rotation into the rear end? Have never driven one so would be basing that on road tests and internet lore however! 😆 Looks a lovely car and a very sweet engine indeed. Definitely deserves to find its voice.

A year ago I bought a similar age RSQ3 and agree, I love it. Quick when you want it to be and normal when you want it. It is probably one of the best cars I have ever owned.

The full photos will probably give you a better idea. I'm glad I didn't leave it any longer, that's for sure.

034 Motorsport rear anti-roll bar is sat waiting to be fitted along with some other trick bits from Whiteline that'll hopefully sharpen the handling up a bit biggrin

The real issue for me with these cars is the people who bought them or now have them. Every day i am inundated on social media platforms with various twonks doing 100mph in a 30 mph built up city centre with some mad posture and autotuned wrap about living in brum and some uber driver called Dave. If its not one of these its a Golf R or the odd ones who gets half a bag ( the thing you put items in not a thousand pounds) and buys an M140i before smashing a kerb launching out of McDonalds

However seeing this has reminded me of how aloof the first RS3 was, i never even remembered it had simple exhausts on it, as only every seen huge twin exit dustbins on the later ones or 4 pipes.

Looks to me you could have one of these and make it quite stealth. I dare say i would even take the badge off.

So being the old fart i am my only other question would be, how good is the MPG i know you shouldn't ask, but if you can drive this around normal in auto without breaking the bank saving it for the odd mad moment, it could be a very nice car to own.

Shame that knobbers spoil certain cars though image wise,

I had 100% take off the front and rear badge, and likely keep the exhaust stock too.

You would only attract the wrong sort of attention otherwise. I've never seen one NOT being driven close to full chat - they must be cheap to insure!

I like your approach, and look forward to seeing how you liven up the chassis.

Have never cared for the non-resonated Milltek on these, however. I find it a pretty harsh noise and irritating on the motorway.

Such a good looking, relatively understated design. Fancied sleeper-ing one of these down all the way to typical 2.0TDI repmobile look, just short of the entire budget to do so!

Those are great photos of the valves, eye-opening and a real point to look at for owners and prospective buyers.

I would be interested to know of any improvement of the running after the valve cleaning
