The wife and I are off to Denver at the end of the month - she's flying, but on work so has to go to a conference over the weekend :p, I'm driving (only 10 hours :D), but will have 4 days to myself :D

Anyway, I noticed that Pikes Peak is only 60 or so miles from Denver and from looking at the website it seems as though you can drive up the same track as the legends!

Anyone done this? Any tips? Seeing as it markets itself as 'America's Most Visited Mountain' I'll make an early start on a weekday.

Not sure about the record-breaking capabilities of either of our current two steeds though....., a 4.0 Cherokee to help us battle vs the Iowan winter and a hired Chevy Malibu - does this car have a SINGLE redeeming feature, God bless it? :D

Thanks

Simon :)

Yes, I've been there and have driven up the Pikes peak Highway 5 or 6 six times in a 2 week period, at the time of the race. I didn't get to see the race as I had to be in school that day but was able to watch allot of the practice, very awe-inspiring.

I highly recommend it but plan on 2 things: Take extra water and coolant as overheating in the altitude and summer heat are a definite possibility and plan on what ever vehicle you drive up to lose about 20 horsepower per mile on the way up.

By the time I reached the summit I was thinking I might have to break out the auxiliary pedals for my 96 H.P. Isuzu Trooper.

Take a good camera! To say on a clear day you can see for miles is a gross understatement! While in the area try also to take in "The Garden of the Gods" city park in Colorado Springs It has to be the most beautiful city park in the entire nation and I think one of the biggest.

Have a great time...

Edit to add: The Chevy Malibu stopped having any redeeming value in the late sixtys...

I made it up to the top in a Z3, no problems.

Enjoy!
