Anyone know if/how to tax a car without a V5c? Have bought a second-hand car but the dealer had lost the reg document.

Problem is section 5 of that form states: "If you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle you may not be able to tax until you get a V5C in your name."

So in that case am I allowed to use the vehicle without tax?

No. You could risk it as the penalty isn't that high.

"Penalty set at £100 reduced to £50 if paid within 21 days. If penalty is not paid, as a criminal offence the case may be pursued via the Magistrates Court. The maximum penalty is £1,000. Sections 144A, 144B, 144C and 144D of the Road Traffic Act 1988."

So you are the owner but not the keeper?

I would just go to the post office, fill the form in, hand over some money and see what happens.

If the car was passed to trade prior to the v5 being lost, you should be able to tax it over the counter with the V62.

Call up the car on the vehicleenquiry.gov system, if the tax end date is not the first day of a month that’s a good sign that it’s been passed to trade.

v62. At a post office

Mum just did the same a few months ago with her dad's car. He passed away, log book nowhere to be seen. She's the owner legally as she inherited the car.

She went with a v62 and paid to tax. Also paid the fee and applied for a new log book at the same time

Well just been to the Post Office and it turns out, despite what the form says, that you can tax at Post Office with form V62. In my case I didn't tax it because I want it to run from 1st Jan and apparently they can't do forward dated tax but their advice is to not send off form V62 but keep it until taxing the car on the 2nd Jan and then give the form to them rather than posting it to DVLA.

Good stuff.

You will need to make sure it is SORNed until 2nd Jan if it is not already.

Hmmmm

You should be fine as DVLA seem to give some grace period in terms of taxing, but I would have thought that you could SORN off a V62?

Although I guess the post office person's point was that you'd never get the V5 back before January 2nd and therefore would end up paying for a duplicate V5 at that point while using another V62 before the first V5 even arrived... ??!?

Just been to the Post Office with the V62 and paid for road tax and £25 for missing V5c at same time. All good.

I hope the trader you bought the car from is covering the £25 for you or at least gave you the money off the purchase price for it...

I knew the V5c was missing before I made the offer.
